ok first when you search a room do you roll a d6 or d10?

As the rules do not specify that you use a d10 for searching, you use a d6.

A metarule is that you roll the d10 only when you are TOLD to roll the d10.

The rules state:
"The 10-sided die (d10) is used for the Class abilities (p. 15). Sometimes a card may let you roll the d10 for something else." Note that searching is not a card, and is not a Class ability. Also: "When the rules or cards just tell you to “roll a die,” or when a room, monster, etc., gives a bonus or penalty on die rolls, this only means the six-sider unless it specifies otherwise." The search table is greater than 6 because there are cards which give bonuses to a roll, plus there are cases where you get bonus dice to roll, giving the possibility of rolls above 6. |

Just in case it triggered the question, the fact that the search results go further than 6 is because, in a 'favorable' room, one can throw two dice (or even more).
