As the rules do not specify that you use a d10 for searching, you use a d6.

A metarule is that you roll the d10 only when you are TOLD to roll the d10.

The rules state:

"The 10-sided die (d10) is used for the Class abilities (p. 15). Sometimes a card may let you roll the d10 for something else."

Note that searching is not a card, and is not a Class ability.

Also: "When the rules or cards just tell you to “roll a die,” or when a room, monster, etc., gives a bonus or penalty on die rolls, this only means the six-sider unless it specifies otherwise."

The search table is greater than 6 because there are cards which give bonuses to a roll, plus there are cases where you get bonus dice to roll, giving the possibility of rolls above 6.

Just in case it triggered the question, the fact that the search results go further than 6 is because, in a 'favorable' room, one can throw two dice (or even more).
