Default When exactly can you NOT play a curse?

The rulebook makes it very clear that you can play Curse cards at ANY time. However, I have a friend who might be taking this a bit too far. Here's a detailed example:

A player is hit with Curse! Lose Two Cards. (First the player on the victim's left draws a card from the victim's had and keeps it. Then the player on the right does the same.) The curse's target has a Curse card in his hand that he doesn't want to be taken from him. He holds his hand in front of him with the card backs facing the player to his left, who happens to randomly choose a card other than the Curse he wants to keep. He then holds his hand in front of the player to his right for her to do the same, and she reaches out for a random card of her own. This player randomly chooses the Curse, but as soon as her hand touches the card, he plays it on someone so she can't take it from him.

I'm pretty sure that you aren't allowed to respond in this way. I've tried to argue that, once Curse! Lose Two Cards officially takes effect, you can't play anything until it's done; it's even too late to play a Wishing Ring at this point. The Curse happened, it resolves, next. Even in card games that do have a 'stack' mechanic, you resolve each card in turn in its entirety before proceeding to the next card.

To make matters worse, he applies and abuses his interpretation in every way imaginable. There are too many examples to list, so I chose the one I felt was the best example to describe why I'm asking this question:

When exactly can you NOT play a curse or anything else that says you can use at any time?

He won't back down on this until he gets an 'official' ruling. I'm not sure if I can or will get one here, but maybe if someone can explain it better than I can, he'll submit.

You cannot play cards in the middle of resolving another card unless the new card says it can be used that way.

In your specific case, the player could not play the curse card until his current curse is resolved and he loses both cards.

Brf is completely correct, and that is my official statement.

Incidentally, timing of when you can play curses and perform other "any time" actions is the primary reason I created my advanced flowcharts (see my signature). For example, there are other times during which you can't play curses, such as between rolling the die to Run Away and suffering the Bad Stuff of the monster that thus catches you. However, it is OK to play them between attempts to Run Away between two different monsters. The flowcharts represent which actions in the game can and can't be interrupted via colouring of the arrows.

The charts are not officially reviewed, but I've tried to cover every ruling I've seen and have asked plenty of questions to ensure that they are as correct as they can be. It might serve as a nice reference chart if he continues to argue about other timings being valid or not.

A few questions to clarify use of the Wishing Ring against this curse...

If you are hit by Curse! Lose Two Cards and you have a Wishing Ring on the table, can you use it to cancel the curse since it can also be used at any time and (as Brf stipulates) says specifically that it can be used to cancel a curse?

If you are hit by Curse! Lose Two Cards and you have a Wishing Ring in your hand, then does the curse's action on your hand (losing two cards and possibly your ring) have to be resolved before it would be legal to play anything from your hand, or can the wishing ring still be used to break the curse's action?

Or, is Blozcot correct in arguing:
Quote:
...once Curse! Lose Two Cards officially takes effect, you can't play anything until it's done; it's even too late to play a Wishing Ring at this point. The Curse happened, it resolves, next.
... where the wishing ring is totally ineffective at countering this curse.

Wishing Ring can be used to cancel any curse, and like all one-shot items, you can play it from your hand, or from the table. However, you cannot see which cards are lost before deciding to use the Wishing Ring. So yes, it would be too late at that point. The timing matters here, not where the card is played from :)
