Book Review: How to be a GURPS GM

Yargh! I forgot to post an update on Sunday - in my defense...I had been awake for several days, and I finally conked out. So here, have a GURPS book review - it's a good one: it's Warren "Mook" Wilson's "How to be a GURPS GM" is a book all GMs should have - even the most experienced ones.

You should sleep. Sleep good. Or do you have nightmares of a man in a brown hat and red-and-green sweater?

That guy gets eaten whole by the stuff that torments me when I sleep.

Triple Threat: Tooth Fairy

Sarah: Ow! It bit me!
Hoggle: What'd you expect fairies to do?
Sarah: I thought they did nice things, like... like granting wishes.
Hoggle: Shows what *you* know, don't it?

These ain't your mother's tooth fairies. They don't leave coins under your bed for teeth. They pull out your damn teeth while you sleep and maybe scratch you up a bit for fun. One is a pain in and of itself - but a swarm of the little bastards can strip a man of his bones and leave a pile of flesh in minutes. They're like flying piranhas that bleed acid. Every worse, they'll happily bit a hole in their cheek so they can bleed on you while they bit YOU. Yeah, best to just stay away from them if you can...if not, don't go to sleep and for the love of all that is holy DON'T LOOSE ANY TEETH!

Designer's Notes: Dungeon Fantasy Video Gaming

Today favors the release of another issue of Pyramid with a article by yours truly (found here). I figured I'd also toss out the Designer's Notes on it as well and give you the whole thing in one day. Enjoy.

No. That's from the nightmare file - I had a dream where I had several hundred of those things eating me alive. I stayed asleep until I finally lost consciousness in my dream and then woke up screaming. Vulture thing is pretty cool though. I'll have to look that up.

Triple Threat: Gwyllgi

"And the days keeps on worryin' me,
there's a hellhound on my trail,
hellhound on my trail, hellhound on my trail"

Robert Johnson is arguably one of the greatest blues-men to have ever lived. If you don't know who he is go look him up and listen to his work. That said...having a hellhound on you trail ain't fun. In fact, it sucks. But having a gwyllgi hunting you is just so much worse. It's got a grudge against every thing alive and it wants to burn you to a crisp. Part-fae, part-demon, and all fire-breathing canine this new critter will spice up your games providing a new enemy for your your players to defeat.

GURPS101: Other Trained by a Master Advantages

That's it. I'm done. I'm poisoning this white-haired bastard's fish-head soup. No amount of martial arts training is worth this. I might as well be Trained by a Master Broomsweeper. Wait? What's that you say? "Christopher, what is this Trained by a Master Broomsweeper? What sort of abilities does it give?" Well, first off, the penalty for Rapid Sweeping is reduced by half, and you can learn esoteric Housekeeping skills like "The Flowers Are Still Standing" to impress your friends and "Pummel Carpet" to get rid of dust. And let's not forget "Targeted Attack (Housekeeping/Dust Bunny)." More seriously...how would you create other "masterful training" advantages like Trained by a Master or Weapon Master? Well, today's topic explores exactly that.

Could you throw up an example for say wizard, psychologist or broomsweeper? The examples are good at showing 'how costs for TBaM and Gunslinger make sense' but don't quite illustrate the build your own notion
