"Geeky" meaning fantasy/SF, gaming, computers, comics -- you know, nerd stuff. Saying "people can be geeky" about anything renders the entire term meaningless. The fact that Geek Culture was moving in that direction is one of the reasons we put it into time out. (Another was to clear out some older threads that were no longer relevant -- or were never relevant, in too many cases.)

There are LOTS of forums online where sports junkies and gun enthusiasts and knitting freaks can discuss those passions with other like-minded people and probably have more run doing it.

Unexpectedly, I feel vindicated. In the sense that lately I've been feeling like I have been deprived of a word which I can use to concisely and mostly unambiguously refer to this basket of topics, because more and more people started telling me that even jocky and snobby stuff can be covered by the words 'geeky' and 'nerdy'. So personally I'm finding this reining in of the scope of the term heartwarming.

I think what's happened is that people realized they can "geek out" about non-geeky topics. "Geek" as a verb is an activity that until recently was only described derisively about stuff that "geeky" the adjective describes.

In the case of Geek Culture, we should limit ourselves to the older adjective meaning of the word, not the newer verb meaning.

Clear as mud, everyone? XD
