In my experience, PV is never taken, DS is rarely taken, and most folks who want to avoid surprise just boost Per. Combat Reflexes and Luck remain more common than dirt.

This is probably a culture thing - PV definitely looks good for a hard-charging types wgho get ahead of their backup, and it is a kind of alternative to DS in the "avoid being surprised" design space.

If you do all your combats on a hexmap, it's really worthwhile. If they're a bit more narrative, and lines of sight aren't being tracked, it's much less useful.

Peripheral Vision also requires a good understanding of tactical combat and how your character will behave optimally on the battle mat. As such, I've rarely (never?) seen a new player take it.

Danger Sense has more obvious benefits, even to neophytes, but it's still relatively rare on new character sheets at my tables.

Notably, none of the characters in Delvers to Go have either advantage. Nor do any of the scouts or thieves that people have posted in this forum.

To me, this suggests that a liberal interpretation of both advantages is warranted.

Optimal behavior on the battle mat is 'avoid situations where PV would be useful'; if you need PV, you (or your teammates) have almost certainly already made a mistake. The exception to this is a solitary combatant, but in general being alone in a multiplayer game is a mistake too.

I stopped taking Danger Sense because the GM was incredibly vague about the info I was given in any situation. Seemed like a waste of 15 pts.

It's not supposed to give information specifically, just 'duck now'.

Þorkell's Gm probably read "A roll of 3 or 4 will also provide a little detail as to the danger’s nature" and decided to run the Advantage even more conservatively on a regular success.

Well, that is the way it's written.

Yes, I'm pretty constrained to hexmap combats; I have a great deal of difficulty visualizing spatial organization or remembering an area description without at least a crude map.

I didn't even get that, just "You have a vague bad feeling".
