And Now for Something Completely Different...
As we all know, Melee started out as an arena combat game. Yet it was also pitched as a replacement combat system for other RPGs. So...
How would you replace the combat systems of your favorite (or not favorite) RPGs with Melee? What would be the minimum number of modifications necessary to "plug Melee in" and it work better than the indigeous combat system? Consider games like AD&D, Tunnels and Trolls or even Traveller. What modifications would be necessary to make Melee work as a combat system? |

Same as all system conversions: convert for feel, not for details. Fights balanced for one system will only be balanced for a different system by accident. You could run AD&D or T&T adventures with TFT out of the book, you'd just need to adjust the encounters. Traveller of course requires new equipment lists.

Re: And Now for Something Completely Different...
A fun topic! On a related point, Arms Law also got its start as a replacement combat system for other games (meaning D&D). It is a telling comment on how game making and publishing worked back then that none of them really explain how this is supposed to work. At this point we were just a couple of years past the point where D&D couldn't decide which of two totally different core combat systems it wanted you to use, neither of which were explained competently! I'll be interested to see what memories people dredge up. I personally never tried to use Melee as the combat engine for another game. Instead, we just assumed our way to using melee as its own quasi-roleplaying game for the couple of years it took for ITL to come out.
