Default Madness: Bibliophobia

Alright, I have a question.
Every time I play Munchkin Cthulhu with my friends there is always a HUGE argument about the Madness card Bibliophobia and the item Necronookiecon. The card says you can't use items with the words "Book" or "Icon" in the name, the Necronookiecon is a BOOK, and is technically in the same group with the cards ending in ICON (necronomicon); does Bibliophobia prevent a player from using the Necronookiecon? I always say yes (even the times when I get the madness and the necronookiecon [and those jerks don't argue then]), and even when the fight goes on long enough for me to merit giving the final word, since I own the copy we play.

To sum up: if you have Bibliophobia are you still able to use the Necronookiecon?

This is tough. Necronookiecon is from the original standalone set and Madness! Bibliophobia comes from Unspeakable Vault, so you would think that there would be some indication that Necronookiecon would be covered. However, I agree with you that this is clearly the kind of card that Bibliophobia would target. I would like to hear Andrew's thoughts before making a final decision, but I would, on the fly, go with your assessment.

Bibliophobia probably deserves its own FAQ entry because of problems like this.

Yes, Bibliophobia prevents you from using the Necronookiecon, by designer's intent. The reply to anyone who argues otherwise is "It's a book, you munchkin: look at the art."

Thanks. I showed this to my friends that fight with me about the Necronookiecon last night, they STILL tried to argue. I told them how the Necronookiecon was created before madness cards and the intent was that it was to be included as a book. All they could say was, "Well, it's a magazine, not a book!", to which I replied, "It's and object made of pages covered in writing, if you were afraid of books it would scare you the same. We're counting it as a book, DEAL with it!" :P Fortunately the ones that argue with me about it aren't part of my preferred Munchkin group, so I won't have to deal with it quite as much.
Thanks for the clarification, guys!

Anything posted here from Andrew Hackard or MunchkinMan is an official ruling, with the same weight as if it were written in the rules. Be sure to mention that to your friends.

For instance, Chad Cloman has a -10 in all combats. Official rule!

(Umm, maybe not...)

That's what I call owned!

Also, if he forgets... *pulls out "GM enforces rules!" card to remind him of the -10 penalty*

And, while we're at it...

*mimics Andrew's voice*

"AMOE has the ability to run away without needing a roll. He teleports. Costs no cards, no levels, no items, but he doesn't get level(s) or treasure(s) from the monster(s) he was fighting, since he ran away, that coward."

Think people will buy that? XD

No, but I'll bet they will believe it when I say, "AMOE can never, ever win a game of Munchkin or any of its offshoots. He starts every game with a -infinity penalty."

Hey, I'm sorry, but it's official. . .

Now, how about the non-moderators stop trying to be junior mods. I think that the fact that my e-mail address is munchkin@sjgames.com says all it needs to.

Now how about Bookmarks, does the madness prevent them since they all have the word book in them?
