Default WFRP: The Ungrateful Dead [IC]

From The Office Of The Captain Of The Bechafen Chapter House

Brother Gaelen,

I trust this letter finds you in good health and the light of Sigmar's grace. I have a matter that I wish you to look into most urgently. I have received a letter from Father Josef, head of a small community of monks at Eerie Hill Monastery near the town of Blutfurd. The message is a little cryptic but it speaks of strange creatures lurking in the swamps around the monastery and there have apparently been a worrying number of disappearances among the townsfolk. Father Josef has asked for our aid.

The vague fears of peasants in such a remote corner of the Empire might not normally warrant our attention but Father Josef has been a friend to The Order in the past. I know him to be a reliable and steadfast man and his letter is counter signed by the Mayor of Blutfurd, Hans Altman and the Captain of the local militia Marcus Dietrich. Vague though the letter is, I trust that if Father Josef is worried then it deserves investigation.

Your orders are to proceed with all haste to the town of Blutfurd. Report to Mayor Altman and present this message as your letter of introduction. He is expecting you. You are to investigate these matters and determine if there is any threat to the security of the Empire or any evidence of The Ruinous Powers at work.

As always you act with the full authority and backing of The Order. You are hereby authorised to use any and all means at your disposal to resolve this matter.

Regards

Captain Klaus Holbeck

Default Scene One - A Walk In The Rain

The "road" to Blutfurt was a churning mud soaked mess that had ceased to be a real road several miles back. It had been raining for days and a thick fog clung to the ground. Struggling through the gloom were two dark men with a dark purpose. The tall and imposing figure of Gaelen Von Sydow, hat pulled down, leather coat wrapped tight about him, rode through the fog on a miserable looking horse. Close behind him was the misshapen lump that was Otto astride an even more miserable looking donkey piled high with packs of equipment.

The rain fell endlessly and the fog just wouldn't shift. Finally looming out of the fog came a sign post "Blutfurt - 3 miles". Just ahead was a rickety looking bridge across the river Blut. This was their only option to get across the river without back tracking for miles. As Gaelen rode towards the unimpressive looking bridge, Otto pulled alongside and whispered in his raspy distorted voice,

"Mashter. Men watchin' us."

Gaelen showed no surprise and merely gave a curt nod. As they drew up to the bridge a large heavy set man with a heavy wooden cudgel leapt from the undergrowth thinking to surprise them. He stood barring their entry to the bridge and shouted toward them.

"Ho there, you in the hat! Haven't you heard? This is a toll bridge now! My bridge."

A score of other bandits loomed out of the fog and undergrowth. There were one or two loaded crossbows but most were poorly armed with farm implements and improvised clubs. The ring leader shouted out to his comrades.

"Well boys how much do you think we should charge these gentlemen?"

The mob of cut throats gleefully shouted back in reply - "EVERYTHING!"

The ring leader chuckled and walked slowly up to Gaelen, slapping the cudgel into his hand to make a point.

"You heard the boys. Throw down all your valuables and go back the way you came or there'll be trouble."

He stopped beside Gaelen and took hold of his bridle trying to get a better look at his victim under the brim of his large hat.

"What's it gonna be then? You paying up or what?"

Gaelen's horse did not stir as the man approached. Gaelen remained motionless too, whilst the constant hiss of the heavy rain filled the tense silence.

Suddenly, the dark steed reared onto it's hind legs with a shriek and the ringleader felt the strength of it's hoofs thudding squarely into his chest.

It all happened so fast; arms flailing, the leader splashed onto the wet murky ground. He looked up to immediately see the horse above him. The rider had outstretched his arm, he was aiming a pistol straight at him.

The Witch Hunter spoke in a commanding tone:

"This day will be your last if you & your brigands do not let us pass."

The ruffian staggered to his feet, gasping, wheezing and clutching his chest. He fought to catch his breath then glanced up at Von Sydow with a look of pure hate before screaming at his men.

Kill 'em!

The bandits charged.

Otto leapt from his donkey landing in the mud with a splash. He used the beast as a shield against the two crossbowmen. A pair of bolts thunked into it's flank and the animal went down kicking and screaming. Otto leapt up from the floor as swiftly as his stumpy legs could propel him. As his enemies rushed in he produced his trusty blunderbuss from under his travelling cloak and pulled the trigger. With a thunderous crack the nearest bandit was blown from his feet and hit the mud as a blasted, lifeless corpse.

The leader flinched at the sheer volume of the blast coming from the dumpy figure's firearm. The Witch Hunter did not react. Instead, he slowly cocked the flintlock pistol in his leather gloved hand and continued to maintain his aim.

"So be it"

Gaelen grasped the handle of his sheathed rapier with his right hand, anticipating combat. He wanted to save this man till last...

As the rest of the bandits closed in Otto threw the spent blunderbuss at one, catching him in the face. Someone jumped on his back trying to strangle him as two others set about trying to beat him into submission with their clubs. Otto reached for the equipment packs on the now lifeless donkey desperately trying to find his axe. He grabbed the haft and pulled the axe free of the the packs, flailing it madly at his attackers. He broke free and waded into their ranks hacking left and right with the huge axe. The air filled with the sound of screams and the sickening thunk-splat of severed limbs and broken bodies hitting the floor.

The would be bandit chief charged in swinging his club towards Gaelen's gun hand, desperately hoping he wouldn't get shot before he could close on the Witch Hunter.

His club made contact with the barrel of the flintlock knocking it aside, as he did so the Witch Hunter pulled the trigger and with a resounding crack the pistol went off. The ball clipped his shoulder and the noise burst his eardrum he was that close. He leapt up and grabbed the the Witch Hunter by his breast plate trying to drag him off his horse and negate any advantage he had from being mounted.

Otto found himself face to face with one of the crossbowmen. The man abandoned his fumbling attempt at a reload and clumsily swung the weapon as a club. Otto caught the useless weapon on the haft of his axe and contemptuously knocked it aside. He swung his axe underarm in a great upwards arc, taking the crossbowman in the chest. The force of the blow stove in the man's chest and lifted him clean off the floor before he fell limp into the squelching mud. Otto put his boot on the rogue's head for leverage, tugged his axe free of the ruined torso and looked around for his next victim.
