It says every GM will work differently, and doesn't say not to do it mechanically. In fact, the examples of labyrinth exploring still have the GM giving out experience points for rolls, and the players deducing how hard a roll was by how much experience was given out.

Technicality. It recommends not to grant XP mechanically but doesn't outright tell you NOT to. That's the way I took it. Those examples were probably copy/pasted from old ITL/Melee/Wizard.

I'm just improving the accuracy of your wording. It doesn't tell or even recommend that you not to give out XP mechanically. It says different GMs will do it differently and then says a GM "should" reward per session based on various vague things, and then:
