I only know "eBooks" that require some provider, a license, some special central servers or some special hardware - never would buy such things.

Google epub, which is not "e books" and is not "Drm laden piece of junk" :)

Then look up "Adobe Digital Editions" - which is software that handles DRM for EPUBs. That's the foundation* of the Nook format, as well as being how Books-A-Million, Kobo, and several other e-tailers sell ebooks.

* Nook = B&N(Adobe(EPUB)), where each set of parentheses represents a DRM layer.

When it is from Google, it is basically evil anyway.
The evil may be hidden now, but *will* show up at some time ...

Um, no. "Google" is being used as a verb in Bruno's message, not as a denotation of ownership...

Any file can have DRM added to it, one way or another.

Conversely, it is possible to have an epub or Kindle format ebook without DRM - Project Gutenberg makes public-domain books available for free without DRM in both formats.

Actually this isn't correct. B&N uses something other than Adobe Digital Editions for their DRM, which is why their ebooks will not work on any other epub reader, while you can use epubs with the ADE DRM on any epub reader you register through ADE (including the Nook).

I just got the Galaxy Tab 10.1 that was a free promotion with my new phone. One of the first things I did was load my most commonly used GURPS PDFs onto it (ES File Explorer is awesome for this, by the way, as it can see all the public shares on my dual-mode – LAN/WiFi – network). About five minutes after that, I decided that it and not books will be at the gaming table with me next game session. I guess I fail to see what's bad about PDF in this context.

I just got a Lenovo IdeaPad K1 10" tablet yesterday. Same basic specs as the Galaxy Tab (and every other Tegra 2 Tablet).

I found ES File Explorer myself and was quite impressed with it. I have a lot of media shared on my network - all of my music and nearly a thousand of my DVDs (many of which I've converted to AVI/MKV for portability). ES File Explorer works very well for accessing and streaming those files to my tablet as well.

If you haven't found it yet, try checking out EBookDroid - of the free PDF viewers, I've liked it the best so far. It has automatic file cropping (which is a bit hit and miss on GURPS margins - newer files tend to work, older ones don't crop the colored margins, though you can still set the zoom to hide the margins). The cropping did work with a couple of the scanned page PDFs I tried - it looks for whitespace and carves it out (which might be why some colored GURPS margins don't crop). You can also set how many pages it will render and cache ahead, making page flipping far better. Plus it does not squark at whatever bug is causing Pyramid issues to fail in other PDF viewers - in fact, it properly renders them.

10.1" screen helps a lot for that. My tablet has a 7" screen, and I barely manage. I do, however, manage...
