My sister won't play because she says there are too many rules
I bought the game for my sister for Christmas. I've never played, I've only seen it played on Wil Wheaton's show. At first she seemed kind of excited, but then she read the rulebook and decided there were "too many rules".
Now I feel like she'll probably never play it, because of the work she thinks is involved in learning how. Is it as difficult to learn as she thinks? The instruction pamphlet does seem a little scary about contradictions between rules and cards - I have to admit I'm not enthusiastic about trying to figure it out, either. |

Like most games Munchkin is easiest learned from someone familiar with the rules showing how to play.
In my eyes the basic rules are easy to learn and there's not so many rules you have to learn. |

Re: My sister won't play because she says there are too many rules
I would like to point out that there are many games in which cards override general rules. There are also many games in which the cards only do what the rules say, but my experience is that the majority of those games have many more pages in their rule books. Some of those games are more difficult, some are the same, some are less.
In my gaming experience, Munchkin is not that complicated. I have a few acquaintances who, snobbishly, won't play Munchkin because it's too "simple." |

I'd suggest watching through the Demo a time or two. The basic game doesn't get much more complicated than that.

Re: My sister won't play because she says there are too many rules
Let's be honest, if Munchkin was a simple game we wouldn't need a forum to discuss the rules.
That said, I don't think the Rules themselves are that complicated. It's the application of those rules to specific situations that gets tricky. In this respect (and only this respect), Munchkin is similar to golf. Even experienced professionals mistakenly violate those rules sometimes. Learning from an experienced player and watching the demo are good suggestions. Good luck. |

Re: My sister won't play because she says there are too many rules
This is exactly the issue. Munchkin's base rules are reasonably simple (with a couple of "you'll just have to remember them" types, like how many one-use items you can lug around on your belt, etc.) but the majority of the cards have some sort of new rule or minor rulebreak that must be accounted for.

Not everyone likes every game, some people don't like any games. Try something different next year.

That's not a rule in Munchkin, but, again, there are many other games besides Munchkin that have the same issue.
