Default Mapping Traveller Game System by Period

Hey,
Looking at the long list of different Traveller Game Systems on Wikipedia, I noticed most cover specific time periods. So I started to map them out.
Period……………………………………………………..…….Game System
Interstellar War - ……………………………………..…. GURPS Traveller: Interstellar Wars (GURPS 4e)
Second Imperium/Rule of Man - ……………..….. n/a
Long Night - ……………………………………………..…. n/a
Third Imperium (Milieu 0) - ……………………..….. T4: Marc Miller's Traveller
Third Imperium (990 - Solomani Rim War) - …. Traveller 20
Third Imperium (1095 – 1107) - ……………………. "Classic" Traveller
Third Imperium (1107-1124 – Rebellion Era) - .. MegaTraveller
Third Imperium (1120 – Non-Rebellion) - …….. GURPS Traveller (GURPS 3e)

But I’m not clear what periods/era the following cover:
Traveller: The New Era
Traveller Hero
Mongoose Traveller
Traveller5
Mongoose Traveller 2nd Edition

Can knowledgeable folks help?

Thanks.
-Dan

The New Era was effectively the end phase of a Long Night that began in MagaTraveller and then Virus. I don't remember the dates.

From the one book and a few sessions Mongoose Traveller (probably 1st ed) was just Milieu 0.

The New Era starts in 1200 Imperial of the Rebellion/Virus timeline.

The Long Night is reasonably represented by early (pre-High Guard) Classic Traveller.

The Dark Nebula boardgame portrays the Aslan Border Wars (-1120 to 380 Imperial) in abstract terms.

The MegaTraveller era begins in 1116 with the beginning of the Rebellion. The background info in the core set is presented as of 1119.

The early New Era material (put out by GDW before its collapse) was set in 1200 and the years immediately following. The later licensed books were set in 1248 and featured a (much smaller) Fourth Imperium.

Traveller Hero and Traveller 5 are nominally non-era-specific, although some elements of T5's character generation are dependent on the Third or Fourth Imperium's institutions being around.

I believe that all of the first- and second-edition Mongoose Third Imperium books have a nominal starting date of 1105, right at the start of the Classic Traveller period. Given that they've issued second editions of more than one Classic Traveller adventure, this makes a certain amount of sense.

TNE - 1200+
TNNE - 1248+
T5 Galaxiad - 1900+ (in the works, no idea if it will ever see the light of day)

No timeline is complete without considering MWM's novel Agent of the Imperium since it is the best source we have for what the 3I was like in the period 400 to 700ish.

With the loss of Loren (and earlier Hans), I wonder whether Marc has a literary executor lined up to take over Traveller canon when the time comes.

MegaTraveller covers through about 1140 in the Hard Times supplement

TNE is, as Chris noted, 1200-1220 or so.

T20 is 990-1020, and has supplements for 1230-1260 or so.

Traveller Hero is setting inspecific -it's got some coverage of Millieux 0, more for 1100 to 1230...

MGT is, like CT, 1100-1115. So is MGT 2.

T5 has no direct setting information; the default which Marc is working on is circa 1900.

Note also: T4 is really focused upon the 50-100 period; the events of -10 to 20 are faits accompli.

Given that Virus hits in 1130, and Hard Times doesn't cover it's effects at all, saying it covers to 1140 is pretty generous. 1130 really is a hard cut-off for MT in the main, Virused, timeline unless you're very far away from 'known space' (and not in a coreward direction, because then the Empress Wave will mess you up).

Hard Times page 79:
Quote:
After 1128
Many of the changes, which become evident from 1125-
1128, require another decade before they are fully resolved,
although many of these resolutions are already obvious by the
end of 1128.
Hard Times therefore goes to at least 1138...

unfortunately Virus was released in 1130 and spread throughout the Imperium - something Hard Times couldn't account for since the flattening of the Imperium by Virus and the re-imaging of Traveller as TNE wasn't even thought about when C Gannon was writing Hard Times - I have the draft outlines somewhere of how he would have resolved the Rebellion era, and some of the terms he came up with would find their way into TNE, but the Virus was Frank Chadwick's idea as a way to reboot eh setting.

The spread of Virus across the Imperium would have taken at least a few years, so there is overlap of Hard Times and Virus release.

As Mike notes, virus doesn't spread instantly. In fact, it gets stopped at the borders of the Regency in late 1131... but Hard Times was originally written for up through the 1130's, and, Like GT, can be used as an ATU into the 1140's sans virus.
