Well yeah. Harold Wilson wasn't a Soviet agent. There's just a myth that he was.

. One of the differences between period mysteries and mysteries actually written in the period is that the latter are almost entirely oblivious to real-world current events.

It made me wonder what other cases 1970s Sherlock would have worked.

The Tate-Labianca murders.
Someone faking a UFO sighting as cover for government skulduggery
An attempt to frame Harold Wilson as a Soviet agent
Operation Mockingbird: A famous journalist commits murder to try to conceal the fact that he was accepting bribes from the CIA to write slanted stories...

It's a mix master myth parallel because Holmes just isn't in 1970s New York, he's in a setting where a lot of myths from the 60s and 70s are true.
Investigates Son-of-Sam murders (which were in New York).

Symbionese Liberation Army/Patty Hearst.

Jonestown cult.

The seventies actually had a great deal of 'legendary criminal cases', because media was advanced enough that such stories would go viral, but before high-tech solving of such cases.

And there was that whole 'world's going crazy' vibe (said by someone who wasn't there in the seventies).

I was. A whole generation did go crazy, by the standards of the generations that preceded them, and in a way that was both unprecedented and subsequently unequaled.

You could put him up against the "mythic" version of the Zodiac killer, who is a manipulative genius with a grand design instead of just a narcissistic psychopath.

And find out where Elvis is hiding after faking his own death.

Don't they have Jimmy Hoffa stashed in Warehouse 23's basement? :)

Given W23's nature, they probably have several to choose from.

There's a James Hoffa who's about the right age, but it's the wrong one.
