There's a Mandeville timeline in IW? I didn't know. Cool. Is mine different enough to still be interesting? Or should I alter it?

Phil Masters points out astronomical observation could be used to estimate a BC/AD calender year for Genesis. That's what I had in mind.

By the way, there's a great article in Pyramid that describes various races from Mandeville's Travels. It gives GURPS and D20 stats. I cannot recall the author off the top of my head. Anyway, it would be very useful for this timeline.

On the reality that bears his name, he did resolve the steering problem prior to his demonstration to the french war ministry, who was impressed by the results. The French Revolution found itself crushed by an army equipped with the world's first rapid mobile artillery, hundreds of years ahead of it's time.
Much as I like the idea, I'm not sure that Cugnot's artillery chariots would have been enough to forestall the Revolution. With only 20 years of development, self-propelled artillery have been unsuitable for fighting in the city...particularly since the French Guard sided with the mobs, and trained soldiers such as themselves would have been well aware of the limitations of the vehicles.

Now if something were to have swayed the Guard to keep them loyal, then the artillery chariots would have definitely been enough of an asset to keep the balance of power with the Monarchy.

IW was written by Kenneth Hite, what did you expect?

And unless Mandeville is to become a generic name for "explorer fantasy"
(or whatever term one can think up) wrlds - which would solve a lot of
naming problems, I guess - Mandeville-2 somehow doesn't seem, well,
Mandeville enough to warrant the name.

Seeing as I don't have a copy of IW[obviously] with which to contrast and compare my timeline, could you suggest any edits or perhaps an alternate name? I hope the observer effect/palimpsest stuff is different enough to make it stand out.

I submitted a world to Pyramid six months ago, but I haven't heard anything from the editor since then...

Considering that "the races from Mandeville's Travels" (at least those
from the Pyramid article) are, if I've understood correctly, generally referred
to as the Plinian races, I imagine that Pliny-(n) would be an obvious name.

Be more exact about where the frontier is and how things look there.
(Central Asia- west of the Azores - south of Cap Verde?) What about
Persia, India and China?

For a more Mandeville flavour, consult The Dictionary of Imaginary Places or
Mandeville himself (I believe Hite has several useful suggestions as well),
and try to decide what changes those places may have gone through in
the 300+ years since Mandeville wrote about them (like being colonised/
conquered by Portugal or the Dutch). Mention these places - any proper
Mandeville parallel diverges with the existence of these places (and the
correct description of the local situation in the mid-14th century by Mandeville).

A good point, and something I thought about since.. What if someone struck upon the idea of using those steam chariots to help ship wheat supplies more easily to starving areas, thus stemming the worst of the famines which sparked the Revolution?

[*] Oops 7 is now Tripartite Alliance Earth.

[**] The Small Pox virus is dead, hip-hip-hooray! Only it wasn't, in the lab.
Researchers for bioweapons on Oops 9 worked on making it even more deadly, but
that wasn't the cause for the plague, surprising as it may seem.

It was caused by the lab that disposed of the "last sample" of Small Pox that
had been in its possession for years. Years. During that time, the sample
mutated into something really lethal. Just the right incubation period, the
right contagious period, then you die of pustules, buboes, and other sores, all
over and in your body and it spread like wildfire.

So what happened was that the lab made a big show of destroying the last sample
of Small Pox, by staging a press conference and mock funeral for the bug. And
instead of just faking it with a harmless mold culture, they used the real
thing. After several "eulogies" about the soon to be deceased, the sample was
placed into a specially rigged incinerator.

The scientists didn't know that the incinerator was rigged. The press didn't
know it was rigged. It was rigged so that it didn't burn as hot as was supposed
to. Seems the black bunting draped on the incinerator would catch fire when it
was operated at full blast. So the "pointy-haired manager" in charge of the firm
had the incinerator rigged to burn at a lower temperature by reducing the amount
of gas that was fed to it.

That would have been alright. The firm's scientists would have found out about
it, turned the gas back on full, and then reincinerate the remains, bunting be
damned. But the aforementioned "pointy-haired manager", after the ceremonial
burn, opened the door to the incinerator...

[***] There were two dreaded "Y2K" problems. The first everyone knows about,
Computers stored dates in the "MM/DD/YY" format. When the YY went 00, the world
was supposed to end for computers. It didn't happen in OTL or for Oops 10.

But, there was that nasty Leap Year calculation: Once every four years, unless
the year ends in 0, unless it's divisible 400. Well, not all the programmers on
Oops 10 took that into account. So on February 29th, the missiles went up and
Oops 10 died.

Dictionary of Imaginary Places? I own that! Of course. I'll grab my copy and start working this stuff up.

Xenarthtral, I like your suggested 'frontier of weirdness'. It's about right. I'll make sure to define that a bit more clearly.

I am trying to obtain a copy of Mandeville's book, so I can use it as a reference.

The Dutch, Portugese, English , colonies and outposts do need more work. I'll add a bit more about them soon. I'll also provide more details on India, China and Persia.

Pliny sounds good, although I've also considered renaming the world after an explorer. We'll see.

I'll work on it some more. Thanks for all the suggestions.
