Re: New worlds for Infinite Worlds
There's a Mandeville timeline in IW? I didn't know. Cool. Is mine different enough to still be interesting? Or should I alter it?
Phil Masters points out astronomical observation could be used to estimate a BC/AD calender year for Genesis. That's what I had in mind. By the way, there's a great article in Pyramid that describes various races from Mandeville's Travels. It gives GURPS and D20 stats. I cannot recall the author off the top of my head. Anyway, it would be very useful for this timeline. |

Now if something were to have swayed the Guard to keep them loyal, then the artillery chariots would have definitely been enough of an asset to keep the balance of power with the Monarchy.

And unless Mandeville is to become a generic name for "explorer fantasy" (or whatever term one can think up) wrlds - which would solve a lot of naming problems, I guess - Mandeville-2 somehow doesn't seem, well, Mandeville enough to warrant the name. |

Re: New worlds for Infinite Worlds
Seeing as I don't have a copy of IW[obviously] with which to contrast and compare my timeline, could you suggest any edits or perhaps an alternate name? I hope the observer effect/palimpsest stuff is different enough to make it stand out.

Re: New worlds for Infinite Worlds
I submitted a world to Pyramid six months ago, but I haven't heard anything from the editor since then...

from the Pyramid article) are, if I've understood correctly, generally referred to as the Plinian races, I imagine that Pliny-(n) would be an obvious name. Be more exact about where the frontier is and how things look there. (Central Asia- west of the Azores - south of Cap Verde?) What about Persia, India and China? For a more Mandeville flavour, consult The Dictionary of Imaginary Places or Mandeville himself (I believe Hite has several useful suggestions as well), and try to decide what changes those places may have gone through in the 300+ years since Mandeville wrote about them (like being colonised/ conquered by Portugal or the Dutch). Mention these places - any proper Mandeville parallel diverges with the existence of these places (and the correct description of the local situation in the mid-14th century by Mandeville). |

Re: New worlds for Infinite Worlds
Dictionary of Imaginary Places? I own that! Of course. I'll grab my copy and start working this stuff up.
Xenarthtral, I like your suggested 'frontier of weirdness'. It's about right. I'll make sure to define that a bit more clearly. I am trying to obtain a copy of Mandeville's book, so I can use it as a reference. The Dutch, Portugese, English , colonies and outposts do need more work. I'll add a bit more about them soon. I'll also provide more details on India, China and Persia. Pliny sounds good, although I've also considered renaming the world after an explorer. We'll see. I'll work on it some more. Thanks for all the suggestions. |
