Default Book of Magnus Query

How is the discard effect of Book Of Magnus (from 40K Savage & Sorcery) intended to work?

Friend of mine was losing against two monsters and proceeded to discard the Book and chose to collect rewards (2 Levels and 6 treasures). This seemed wrong to me (why, if you can do that, would anyone choose to Run Away?) but I couldn't quite come up with a convincing argument vs the text as written at the time.

Any clarification greatly appreciated.

If you are winning, you can collect the rewards. If you are losing, you Run Away automatically. I will make a note to clarify this in future printings.
