Default Ogre Computer Game

Per the announcement in Update #221, the game will be published on Steam. What Operating Systems are going to be supported? This is a MAJOR concern of mine, because while Steam does have a Linux client, I'm not sure how many games are really supported on it. Not to mention my personal dislike of DRM, but I'll get over it for this game :)

Also, is there any chance of a mobile version of the game? Phones would probably be too small, but tablets would be nice...

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Steam, either. No disconnected play, etc. Considering I still play the original Apple II game (because I own it, not rent it and not at the mercy of some third-party system), I'm pretty disappointed too.

It's better than not having it at all, but not by much. :-(

Steam has an offline play mode. I don't know what, if anything, the developer has to do to make sure that will work, but it should certainly still be an option at this point.

If I could play it offline, I would be interested in picking up this computer game.

That's still not "truly" offline, but it's better than nothing. You still don't "own" the game; if the backend goes away, there's no way to install it again in the future on a new computer. All the games I have CD-ROMS (and floppies, for that matter) are things I can still install and play if I want.

I realize this is mostly a philosophical discussion about DRM and program ownership, but most of us that are old enough to be original Ogre fans grew up in a world where when you bought something, you owned and and could play it whenever and however you wanted. That world appears to be long gone and it's a real shame. Just imagine if your 1977 copy of Ogre had an expiration date on it...

I agree completely.

I have noticed, of late, that some new PC games are seeing simultaneous releases on GOG.com as well as Steam. And GOG.com is much better about allowing you to download and backup a standalone installer and not requiring the software to phone home before use.

I wonder if that is an option?

I'm also in the camp of really owning a game vs just licensing it. I too have a number of copies of the original Ogre game and will occasionally play it. I would prefer something on CD-ROM or a download. I'm like that with music. Even if I can DL music for free, I still will buy a CD when available. Having the physical item shows that I own it and will own it for a long time.

I'm also a Linux user and hope that the game will run on Linux.

Searching for Auroch Digital games on Steam, I find only Chainsaw Warriors and its sequel, games from 2013 & 2015 which both support Linux & Mac; and Last Days of Old Earth, a Windows-only game just released last month.

So, mixed news as far as the chances of Ogre working on Linux. :/

Good call. Sounds like they are capable, so as long as that's on the table up front, we should be ok.
