Riffing off Lost in Space and adding extra touches. The idea of setting up an "American Small Town" in Spaaaaaace! would be period appropriate. Either sincerely or satirically (Topeka in the film is a bitterly snarky take on this trope).

The business of getting a populace together and setting them up could make an epic and deeply snarky campaign.

Note: Once done other nations could emulate what America did. So even if the USA achieved Mayberry in space ( with a slice of Medfield), some one else's small town might be more like the village.

In period, the late 1960's, Scandinavia had a reputation for intellectual sophistication and sophisticated gloom. Part of this came from Bergman films and part of this came from Gloomy Philosophers. Not fair or accurate, but it could be used in story nicely.

Watch the film Hour of the Wolf (named for the hour of the night when people were supposed to be in the greatest danger of dying). Next reimagine Baron von Merkens (the lead "demon" from the "castle") as an experiment in psionics that has invited a group of Psions to his castle on the isle of Baltrum. The Baron is proposing to use a form of Psychodrama to aid Psions in breaking through their barriers to new levels of understanding and power.

What the PCs don't know is the Baron means to use the Psions as a bridge so that he and his allies can breakthrough to new levels of insight and power. If the Psions live or die, stay sane, go mad, lose there powers, or their souls, the Baron could care less.

It's Belter ("Belta") creole, and it means "the Belters'" <whatever> -- ideas or resources the Belters consider their own, exclusively.

Anybody who tries to claim or control something of the "Beltalowda," it means they're stealing from the Belter society, as a whole.

Oh! To answer the question asked! There is a lot of working class solidarity in this setting and moreso in the Belt. But this society is still in the year 1970. John Wayne is still making movies. The Myth of Rugged Individualism is still huge. However this society is very likely to move toward greater levels of working class solidarity than has been experienced in our world because such solidarity is very likely to be highly beneficial and rewarded by the setting.

Being in the Belt it isn't in anyone's territory and is equally far from everyone. So I'd expect a very international mix from all nations that have space programs. Like a gold rush but even more so.

Now I'm think of James Garner in Support Your Local Sheriff where he takes the sheriff job but warns them it is only temporary since he is on his way to Australia where the real frontier is.

That mix, the Garner film and a working class space setting, it might make a fun adventure. By the way. Garner's character read a book about Australia and was enchanted bu the wonders of the land. He didn't deny either place's " frontier" status.

The Moons of Jupiter would be an actual frontier in this setting. Technology to exploit the Moons beyond Io(which is way to deadly as of yet) is coming on line. A scramble to find and claim the resources between nations could make a good adventure game.

What impact would the 'Red Scare' or lack of it, have on socialistic tendencies in the frontier? If the Belt is highly multi-nation there might not be as much fear of collectivism even if the USA had its 'Red Scare' moment, but there would probably be some push by the major Earth powers to discourage too much cooperation. Don't want those colonials to forget where they came from!

@tshiggins: Thanks for clarifying my reference!
