Default A few questions about munchkin...

So, this is my first time posting here, and it's after a weekend where i had friends stay over and we spent maybe 6 hours playing munchkin. Beyond what we could find on the forums, these are the following issues/questions we have:

1. Selling/stealing
If you sell from your hand, is it possible for a thief to steal what your selling? We have temporarily instigated a step where the cards hit the table, then get sold (the thief has a single chance to steal each item), before being sold, but there is discussion on the actual legality.

2. Kicking the Door
Is kicking the door the equalivent of "Drawing face-up" as far as the cleric ability ressurection is concerned?
Right now, we are playing that it is, which allows a cleric to "revive" the last defeated monster and re-defeat it.

3. "In response"
we've had a few times when people throw curses that make you forget your race/class "in response" to something happening, such as a thief backstabbing, then someone said "in response" and cursed the thief. After nearly 45 minutes of arguing at the loudest possible volume, I made the decision to allow it for the moment. There are a few other things people have done "in response" as well, and I'm wondering how we can determine what "resolves" first, (such as, someone tried to throw a potion to help a monster, and someone else who was not in the combat tried to steal the potion to prevent it).

4. A "Stack" order
Similar to Magic how everything goes "on a stack" while stuff is debated/done. For example, if I throw a curse at someone who is in combat, and someone else uses a wishing ring, but a thief (also not in combat) wanted to steal the ring to prevent that, what gets resolved first? The wishing ring, or the attempt to steal? Or, someone said he was going to discard a hireling to steal, so I killed it for a level instead, which gets resolved first, his discarding to steal, or my killing to level?

We take games a bit seriously, but that leads to lots of fun, especially when we are able to successfully "troll" someone into rage-quitting (for example, we robbed my friend blind at level 8 and he wasted the cards in his hand trying to steal back his items).

1. Selling/stealing
You can sell them from your hand and once you start selling, nobody can stop you until you have finished. There is no necessity to play them to the table first, so no chance to steal stuff.

2. Kicking the Door
Yes, that is a face-up draw and is one of the best ways to utilise the ability.

3. "In response"
There is no stack, nor 'in response' in Munchkin. Once an action starts, it must be completed before you take the next action, such as playing a card. Thus, once the Thief discards his card in payment for the backstab, the target Munchkin is backstabbed.

4. A "Stack" order
See previous response.

Thanks, another question real quick, or more of, a way to explain it to them because they still complain about it:

We had an incident where a player was a bard, and he was level 9. He couldn't defeat the monstrosity that we had created to stop him from winning through the use of +5's, +10's and a pure rain of potions. So his plan, was to use his ability and pull someone into combat to beat the monster and not gain the levels.

Now, I know that this is not how it works, and we found someone asking this same question, however they still don't understand why.

Is there anything you can tell me so I can explain this to them a bit better?

Actually, they blame the rules/SJgames saying "They should have been more specific about how the bard ability and leveling works".

The card says you cannot use the Enthrall ability to get the winning level. There is no rule that allows you to forgo leveling at the end of a successful combat, so you can't attempt to Enthrall anyone as the card says you can't.

The FAQ can also be used to help explain this to your friends:

The general rule is that you may not reach Level 10 except by killing a monster. If you are at Level 9 and something else happens that would normally let you go up a level . . . you don't. You stay at Level 9. If you have a card or an ability that lets you mess with another player and get a level in return, you cannot play that card or use that ability.

Except, of course, the cards which actually are designed to be played in response to something, like Wishing Ring, which can be played in response to a Curse to prevent the Curse from ever happening. . .

Let me wax philosophical on "the stack." A stack mechanism is not a natural method for resolving issues in time. Normally, in life, we do something, and it can't be undone because someone decides they're going to do something about it. If you stick your hand in molten lava, me saying, "No, don't do that!" will not return your hand to you, nor make you forget that pain. Most games don't have a stack mechanism. In most games, playing a card, or taking some action, is not an indication of intent to play that card or take that action, it's playing that card or taking that action, and therefore it's done. For a game to have a stack mechanism, then the rules have to spell it out, in detail, how that particular game's stack works. Munchkin's rules do not spell out a stack mechanism for you to use, so there's no reason to infer that one should exist just because that other game has one. In fact, you should infer the opposite.
