Default Timing on Cards

If someone is in combat and then someone plays the Lose Two Cards curse on me, can I play an Enrage monster enhancer on the monster that person is fighting and then place the item that was in my hand down on the table so there is nothing to take from me? I did it in our game today and it felt super sketchy and I felt bad about it. Was it legal?

Not legal. Once a card is played, its effect(s) must be dealt with before anything else can be done. In your example, that means lose the two cards that the Curse told you to lose in the way it told you to lose them before you do anything else. You certainly can't play cards so you can't lose them.
