Re: Roleplaying experiences without a GM in Car Wars?
industrialchild,
You are welcome. I am glad I could help. Keep in mind the Car Wars Adventure Gamebooks are out of print and rare, therefore if you do find copies, the prices will likely be high. Shopping around is a good idea. I recall a scenario called "Rush Hour" in one of the early issues of ADQ that had rules for how vehicle bystanders in a traffic jam would behave if vehicles starting duelling. These rules might be helpful to you. Convoy was originally printed in ADQ 1/1 as an adventure requiring a referee. The information between the adventure in ADQ 1/1 and in the programed adventure is different. Feel free to send me a note if you have further questions.

industrialchild, what owenmp said, you're very welcome. I really like the Autoventures and the TSR / SJGames books a lot.
Does anyone know if either Space Gamer or Dragon published any CW adventures? The Dempsey XM not withstanding. >:) |

Re: Roleplaying experiences without a GM in Car Wars?
You can probably adapt other rules systems that specialise in GM-less or solo play (which is in effect GM-less with an extra player) to CW as well.
These are as diverse as Solo wargaming articles (Donald Featherstone had a whole book on it IIRC), to solo RP games (e.g. Space Trader for Traveller) to cooperative board games. There is free software available to create your own choose-your-own-adventure books. As the GM for CW I generally have to play multiple enemy vehicles (and often multiple factions), so I have plenty of practice in the even-handedness required for this type of gaming. If you are looking for random encounters you might also consider Vehicle Guide volume 1. This book was supposed to represent the standard designs you might be expected to encounter on a daily basis. It is sometimes referenced in the ADQ scenarios. The designs can be outdated, frequently sub-optimal and sometimes illegal (it depends on which version of the rules you are running them against), but this isn't unreasonable if you are representing random traffic of variable. The later Vehicle Guides are less useful as the designs are either overly specialised or are badly illegal (especially in VG3). |

Re: Roleplaying experiences without a GM in Car Wars?
Indeed, thank you Owen! A whole new world just opened up for me. My local print shop is happy to have the business utilizing their oversized printer for maps and I'm planning on playing Convoy tonight with my mom and little brother. Each of us will control two characters and it's looking to be quite the experience!!! Great stuff! Memphis or bust!!!

Re: Roleplaying experiences without a GM in Car Wars?
For some reason many copies of Mean Streets were available in the UK . Not only did it seem to appear in those CW Grab Bags , but was often seen in bargain bins . I purchased six copies at a Virgin Games Store for 50p each from a bargain sale - even better as it 33% off total bill - in 1993/4 . Already had a copy , so distributed them around our groups . I still have at least two copies on my bedside shelves & possibly one more in a storage box .
Other CW items that were seen here in huge numbers , were ADQs 7/1 & 8/3 , Road Atlas Volume 7 Mountains West & various City Blocks packs . In fact Leisure Games in North Finchley , London , STILL had copies of City Blocks 3 & 4 and Vehicle Guide 2 Counters last time I visited around 2009 ! The odd CW product or Auto Adventures books also cropped up at The Orcs Nest in Central London . The long time Deputy Manager - 'Baldrick' - was a big CW fan ... ;-)
