So your character has nightmares and problems sleeping and blames that on a figment of his imagination because he's crazy. Now you see if the other personality could make other people have hallucinations, that would be his advantage. That your character has nightmares and problems sleeping is his disadvantage.

It's exactly like that. He doesn't cause hallucinations no matter what it may seem. Rather there's some underlying cause that gives the character hallucinations. Bob taking credit for the other hallucinations is itself one of them. Bob IS one of the hallucinations.
