How does one acquire the rights to a basically-abandoned product like this? If a company like Metagaming winds up defunct, and their assets aren't auctioned off to cover debts or whatnot, where do the rights to those end up?

In this case, it appears to have been 17 U.S. Code § 203, which is only usable by the author (or heirs if dead).

Re: December 26, 2017: The Fantasy Trip Returns Home
Holy Pants!!!
I abandoned all hope long ago... I came home from my initial orthodontist appointment (9th grade) to find that Melee & Wizard arrived in the mail that day. I wasn't really expecting it, for this was when "allow 6 to 8 weeks for delivery" meant "whenever". I read the rules then put Flavius and Wulf through their paces. Again and again. I had teams of spearmen pitted against Giants, bears, and wolves. I think those were all the "monsters" available. Maybe snakes? Later that night I dove into Wizard. Man, it was so cool. A few months later my brother came home for Christmas and taught me about summoning creatures in shadow hexes, which was all the rage among thegrad students in the Cornell Comp. Sci. Department. Enough for now. I've got to go explain to my wife why I'll be breaking out in random giggles for the few months. YEE-HAH!!!!! |

This is pretty amazing news, and not likely to be something that just "happened". I'm happy for you, but probably not as happy as you are to regain your wayward 'offspring'!
Even if these games don't get a full release anytime soon, just the fact that they are no longer 'abandoned' is good to know. Between this and all the 40th Anniversary Ogre developments, 2017 seems to have been a very 1977 type of year. |

Congrats Steve!
Are you planning on converting them to GURPS/DF or trying to acquire the rights to TFT?
