I have a copy of Starleader: Assault, somewhere, but I remember it was clunky and didn't always work.

I'd buy that. It's a pretty natural fit, both being early, simple and straightforward systems. I ran a few Traveller campaigns back in the day, and apart from most of the player-characters being comparatively old due to full-term military service, it was a good ruleset. Plus adding the Snapshot rules to TFT could be interesting.

One of the more interesting things you might end up making in such a hybrid game is a very elegant career-path system, which I think would naturally emerge as you meld TFT's talents with Traveller's careers. The end result might look a bit like Warhammer or something.

Agreed, especially if you incorporated medieval concepts like apprenticeships, guilds, and yeomanry to the talent acquisition pathways. And of course the Wizard's Guild would have quite the system of advancement under this regimen as well.

Re: I do hereby request a TFT version of Traveller
Well, I would say that the odds of an licensed "Traveller Trip" is fairly low due to the legal needs of such a thing.
However, Sci-Fi Trip, has been something that I've been interested in since the aforementioned Starleader: Assault days. In theory, it's just adapting the Fantasy Trip framework into a different setting. In practice, higher tech weapons really stress the system in ways it doesn't like to be stressed. It's not impossible, but it is challenging. |

Perhaps borrow the "personal force-field" concept from Dune, forcing everyone back to personal combat with melee weapons. I always felt that was a very clever literary device for combining swords and starships. But I imagine those things (if true to the Frank Herbert design) would block missile weapons and spells as well.
