Default IW: Kearny-1

Here is another timeline from alternatehistory.com written up in GURPS IW terms along the lines of Heinlein-1 which was posted earlier. Here is the link to the original thread of the timeline. Be warned, it it long. https://www.alternatehistory.com/for...sparta.237525/

Kearny-1, Current Year 1867

Current Affairs-

Divergence Point- 1862 General George McClellan drowns during the Seven Days Battle when the warship he is on strikes a mine and sinks. This leads to General Phil Kearny being given command of the Army of the Potomac and ultimately the Union Army. The leadership of the Union Army is much more aggressive and effective. During the war, radicals within the Confederate government commit atrocities against captured Union officers and African-American soldiers, which had the effect of radicalizing the populace of the North. The Union takes Richmond in 1863 and the Confederacy collapses in 1864. The United States has started the process of reintegrating the southern states back into the Union and eliminating the influence of the Confederate power structure in them.

Major Civilizations- Western (Empire with rivals), Orthodox (Empire)

Great Powers- British Empire (Representative Democracy, CR3), Imperial France (Oligarchy, CR4) United States (representative Democracy CR3, CR5 for former Confederates), Czarist Russia (Dictatorship, CR5)

Worldline Date: 1867

TL: 5

Mana Level: No Mana

Quantum: 4

Infinity Class: P5

Centrum Zone: Inaccessible

Infinity just recently discovered this timeline. The POD is of recent vintage. During the Seven Days battle the commander of the Union Army, George McClellan drowned when the ship his headquarters was on struck a Confederate mine and sank. This led to a General Phil Kearny being made commander of the Army of the Potomac. In Homelime’s history Kearny never advanced to high command as he was killed shortly before the Battle of Antietam. In this timeline, Kearny showed both ability and initiative that set the Confederate forces back. Kearny’s appointment led to more aggressive and effective leadership of the Union forces earlier than in Homeline’s history. The Union Army took Richmond in the autumn of 1863. The Confederacy was pushed further, completely collapsing in 1864. The United States is now in the process of reintegrating the Southern States back into the Union.

During the campaigns of 1863, Confederate forces executed a Union General and African-American soldiers under his command. This was done by the initiative of middle level officer. However the Confederate Government had issued a general order threatening such executions in response to the Emancipation Proclamation, but not intended it to be implemented in the way it was. Jefferson Davis could not renounce the action due to political considerations. This led the North’s populace becoming radicalized. The plot to assassinate Lincoln took place in this timeline but only succeeded in killing Mrs. Lincoln instead of President Lincoln. The reaction of the Southern Populace to the 13th and 14th amendments led to rioting and civil unrest.

This increased the power of the Northern Radicals and led to their version of reconstruction taking place. Those who supported the Confederacy through actions have had their citizenship terminated. Those in position of leadership (Government officials and field rank military officers- Captain and Higher) are prohibited from regaining their citizenship and are being exiled from the United States. The lower ranks of Confederacy can regain their citizenship through the naturalization process. A colony of exiled Confederate has started being formed in Mexico. The Mexican Revolution has gone differently and the Imperial Mexicans under Maximillian are winning the war, supported by Confederate exiles.

Other than the changes in North America, the timeline seems to mostly similar to the history on homeline in the late 1860s.

OFFWORLD ACTIVITY

Infinity only recently discovered this timeline. As of now, it is primarily of interest to academics on Homeline with an interest in the Civil war/Reconstruction and those who advocate the practice of social engineering alternate timelines. Infinity Inc is interested in how the United States goes about reintegrating the South back into the Union.

Infinity named the timeline after the General who seems to be the focal point of most of the changes that have taken place.

Centrum is aware of the timeline and would of course like to influence events to encourage governments favorable to it to come to power, but since it the timeline quantum 4, there is little that Centrum can do other than watch. Centrum is hoping that the United States is on the path to a Centrum style racially neutral meritocracy.

There is no evidence that the Cabal is involved in this world as it has no mana.

However, Reich-5 recently discovered the timeline. It is considering possible plans to use the exiled Confederates to further the Reich’s goals. The Reich knows that at the present, the Confederacy is a lost cause, but is hoping to develop opportunities to spread their power

If Little Mac drowns early in 1862, I assume that a Union victory in the late spring or early summer of 1862 courtesy of Phil Kearny induces A. Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation some months before OTL. Then the remainder of the description fits. Otherwise, without this divergence, Emancipation Proc. is issued on Jan. 1, 1863 as in OTL and the execution of Union officer & Afr.-Am. soldiers would occur in 1863.

I went back and reread the thread, in particular the part about the battle that led to the capture of the Union General (David Hunter) and the African-American soldiers that were captured. I was wrong. That campaign appears to have been in the campaign season of 1863 instead of 1862. It also, if I read the timeline right, came after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in this TL. It looks like the executions and retaliatory executions by the Union took place in late April and Early to mid May 1863.

I've made a change on the original post to reflect this.

The Proclamation was issued by Lincoln at a Cabinet meeting on December 14, 1862 and became effective on March 21, 1863. https://www.alternatehistory.com/for...4#post-5934684

I would say the Proclamation was about the same time as OTL, perhaps unofficially issued earlier, but came into effect legally later than Homeline. The reaction of the South and the executive order issued by Davis in response started a domino effect that led to the executions and inflamed Northern Opinion. https://www.alternatehistory.com/for...4#post-5935633
