Default Fallen Stars Bestiary: A Monstrous Mutant Menagerie

Fallen Stars Bestiary

Main Fallen Stars thread located here.

The urban ruins and wild places of Fallen America are crawling with strange denizens: armadillos the size of elephants, long-legged land alligators, beavers that are like whales, reclusive but deadly psychic bears, and still freakier fauna. The Fallen Stars Bestiary arms you with the knowledge and game statistics to take them on.

Ground Rules
Each post will contain three or four mutant animals tied together by a common theme, ranging anywhere from as specific as "freshwater fish" to as broad as "creatures with psychic powers". The entries follow all the rules laid out in the standard Fallen Stars thread, including the constitution of "core materials" and referencing game mechanics outside of those materials. The "Abilities" post from said thread will be particularly relevant, as the new abilities presented are frequently applicable to the animals covered here. Each entry contains the following portions:

Quick Information: A brief listing of the creature's primary common name, scientific name (genus, species, and sometimes subspecies), creature of origin (animal species that was mutated by the Starfall into the presented current form), average length or height (depending on whether it is horizontal or bipedal/semi-erect), native habitat and range, and typical diet.

Basic Information: Flavor text discussing appearance, key information about the species, and anything else that seems pertinent or interesting.

Game Statistics: Statistics are presented for an "average" member of a particular species. They are formatted primarily as a racial template, save for a few alterations such as having specific attribute scores and skill ranks rather than just modifiers listed. This is purely a personal preference thing rather than any indictment on how other books format their creature entries.

Size Modifiers: While standard GURPS protocol dictates that if a creature's length/height falls between two Size Modifiers it is always rounded up, Fallen Stars instead decides the size modifier by rounding down or up depending on whether the creature falls in the lower or upper half of the intervening numbers.

Creature Index

The Unexpected Neighbors

Not all American mutant animals are necessarily native fauna; indeed, the following creatures are all examples of the opposite. Two are feral populations that became strange new natives through the intervention of the apocalypse, while the third is a former popular zoo attraction that beat the odds and ingrained itself into the Fallen American landscape.

American Elephant
Scientific Name: Elephas americanum
Creature of Origin: Asian Elephant
Average Length: 22 feet
Habitat: Cold woodlands and plains
Native Range: Canada and northern North America
Diet: Grasses, shrubs, and deciduous tree foliage

Almost all of the exotic wildlife populations in the zoos and parks of America died out during the Change, not undergoing the mutations that their native populations may have underwent in their homelands. In spite of all logic, this was not the case for the herds of Asian elephants in zoos (and at least one large nature reserve for rehabilitated specimens) across the northern United States, which not only mutated and survived, but migrated together to form multiple nomadic herds. These are the American elephants, also referred to as neo-mammoths or nammoths due to their woolly fur and long upward-curving tusks. These herds still migrate every year, heading from their summer homes in northern British Columbia and Alberta to their wintering grounds ranging from Oregon to the Great Lakes. Many tribals and isolated outposts in the north have come to partially rely on the traveling American elephants for food and clothing. The Phantom Lake tribe of northern Yellowstone National Park has even made forays into taming American elephants as war mounts just as the Mughals did to the great beasts' ancestors.

Creature Statistics [247 Points]
Meta-Traits: Quadruped (Replace No Fine Manipulators with One Arm) [-25], Wild Animal or Domesticated Animal [-30].
Attributes: ST 40 [210]; DX 10 [0]; IQ 5 [-100]; HT 13 [30].
Secondary Characteristics: SM +3; HP 40 [0]; Will 11 [5]; Per 11 [5]; FP 13 [0]; Basic Speed 5.75 [0]; Basic Move 5 [0].
Advantages: Acute Hearing 5 [10], Acute Taste and Smell 3 [6], Damage Resistance 4 (Tough skin, -40%) [12], Discriminatory Hearing [15], Discriminatory Smell [15], Head Bash [1], Long Conical Tusks [18], Long Trunk [15], Monocular Vision [15], Subsonic Hearing [5].
Perks: Fur [1], Penetrating Voice [1], Sure-Footed (Snow) [1], Sure-Footed (Uneven) [1].
Disadvantages: Gregarious [-10], Restricted Diet (Herbivore) [-10], Slow Eater [-10].
Skills: Brawling 15 (DX+5/E) [16], Survival (Arctic) 13 (Per+2/A) [4], Survival (Plains) 15 (Per+4/A) [12], Survival (Woodlands) 15 (Per+4/A) [16].
-Variant, Bull American Elephant [255 Points]: The statistics above reflect an adult cow American elephant, and are somewhat altered to reflect adult bulls. Adult bulls of the American elephant, like most wild elephants, are solitary creatures rather than members of herds. They are also known for being particularly hardy and self-sufficient but far more prone to violent outbursts, especially in the period known as musth, when hormones skyrocket and tempers flare to a fever pitch. Even those that have learned to tame the great elephants of the north do not attempt to handle bulls, and any breeding is done by allowing a wild bull access to a herd of cows within a corral. Increase ST to 42 [14] and HT to 14 [10], remove Gregarious [10], and add Single-Minded [5], Bad Temper (9 or less) [-15], Loner (6 or less) [-10], Stubbornness [-5], and Territorial* [-1].
*This is Extremely Limited Disadvantage (Bad Temper when a member of the same sex and species is in its territory). A variant known as Group Territoriality extends to all members of a pack, herd, or other group of animals against outsiders of the same species.

Panther
Scientific Name: Felis obscurus
Creature of Origin: Domestic Cat (American Shorthair)
Average Length: 9 feet
Habitat: Mountain forests, deserts, and hilly scrubland
Native Range: Western United States, northwestern Mexico, and southwestern Canada
Diet: Small to mid-size prey animals

The panther greatly resembles the pre-apocalyptic cat known as the mountain lion (Puma concolor) that it takes its moniker from, save for slightly more slender builds, ears that are triangular rather than rounded, and a wider variety of fur coloration – gray, tan, and cinnamon are all common colors, sometimes with slightly lighter or darker coloration in a striped or brindled pattern. From the rugged forests of Yosemite to the scrub of the Texas Hill Country and all manner of land in between, these descendants of house cats have shown themselves to be extremely adaptable and successful apex predators. They are greatly feared by beasts and people alike for their ability to use innate psychic powers to warp and twist light around them until they are almost entirely invisible. Of course, fear can turn into reverence as well, and many tribes and hunters in the cats' range prize their pelts. There is also at least some demand for panther kittens, as they can still be somewhat tamed and trained at an early age.

Creature Statistics [23 Points]
Meta-Traits: Quadruped [-35], Wild Animal [-30].
Attributes: ST 11 [6]; DX 14 [48]; IQ 4 [-120]; HT 12 [20].
Secondary Characteristics: SM +1; HP 15 [0]; Will 12 [10]; Per 12 [10]; FP 13 [0]; Basic Speed 6.75 [0]; Basic Move 6.
Advantages: Acute Hearing 3 [6], Acute Taste and Smell 3 [6], Acute Vision 2 [4], Catfall [10], Claws (Sharp) [5], Discriminatory Hearing [15], Discriminatory Smell [15], Invisibility (Electromagnetic; fringe, -10%; switchable, +10%) [40], Teeth (Sharp) [1], Terrain Adaptation (Uneven) [5].
Perks: Fur [1], Limited Camouflage (Tall grass) [1], Penetrating Voice [1], Sure-Footed (Sand) [1], Sure-Footed (Snow) [1].
Disadvantages: Light Sleeper [-5], Loner (9 or less) [-7], Short Lifespan 3 [-30], Stubbornness [-5].
Quirks: Territorial [-1].
Skills: Brawling 15 (DX+1/E) [2], Climbing 17 (DX+3/A) [12], Jumping 17 (DX+3/E) [8], Stealth 13 (DX-1/A) [1], Survival (Desert) 13 (Per+1/A) [3], Survival (Mountain) 14 (Per+2/A) [8], Survival (Woodlands) 13 (Per+1/A) [3].

Razorback
Scientific Name: Sus dirus
Creature of Origin: Feral Pig
Average Length: 8 feet
Habitat: Temperate and subtropical woodlands, swamps, and scrub
Native Range: Eastern United States, southeastern Canada, and coastal Australia
Diet: Roots and tubers, above-ground fungi, berries, small animals, eggs, and carrion

Razorbacks mostly resemble particularly large and thick-bodied feral pigs with fur ranging from simple black or brown to patches of black and white or even piebald color, their main differentiation from their non-mutated ancestors being a patch of short and thick porcupine-like quills along the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Most people and animals alike know to wisely avoid the rampaging sounders of between ten and fifty razorbacks as they tear through the wilderness in search of anything even mildly edible. Those who get on the wrong side of these large opportunists' foul tempers are savagely attacked with tusks that can reach ten inches in a fully grown male, and there are several accounts of people being literally torn limb from limb by entire groups of enraged hogs. Multiple attempts have been made to re-domesticate the razorback for either food or combat, all of which have failed miserably.

Creature Statistics [-35 Points]
Meta-Traits: Quadruped [-35], Wild Animal [-30].
Attributes: ST 16 [30]; DX 11 [12]; IQ 5 [-100]; HT 13 [30].
Secondary Characteristics: SM +1; HP 16 [0]; Will 10 [0]; Per 11 [5]; FP 13 [0]; Basic Speed 6 [0]; Basic Move 6 [0].
Advantages: Acute Hearing 2 [4], Acute Taste and Smell 3 [6], Damage Resistance 2 (Tough skin, -40%) [6], Discriminatory Smell [15], Enhanced Move (Land) 1 [20], Hooves [3], Monocular Vision [15], Night Vision 5 [5], Reduced Consumption 5 (Cast-iron stomach, -50%) [5], Sharp-Edged Tusks [3], Short Spines [1], Single-Minded [5].
Perks: Fur [1], Sure-Footed (Uneven) [1].
Disadvantages: Bad Temper (9 or less) [-15], Berserk (9 or less) [-15], Short Lifespan 2 [-20], Stubbornness [-5].
Quirks: Group Territoriality [-1].
Skills: Brawling 12 (DX+1/E) [2], Survival (Woodlands) 15 (Per+4/A) [16], Swimming 13 (HT+0/E) [1].
-Variant, Kingpig [-25 Points]: In the forests and swamps of eastern Texas and western Louisiana, the farthest west that the razorback's range extends, there are a group of razorbacks with even thicker hides and denser musculature, especially around the shoulders and neck. These razorbacks, known as kingpigs, seem to be the direct result of a lack of land-based competition for larger prey, as none of the apex land predators found further north and east live in the humid bottomlands. Increase ST to 17 [5] and Damage Resistance to 3 [3], and add Temperature Tolerance 2 (+2 to upper range) [2].

Beasts in Mighty Mississippi Bay

Mississippi Bay is the inundated remnant is what was once much of southern and eastern Louisiana, transformed into its silt-laden brackish water bay by the Gulf of Mexico rising to meet the Mississippi River further up its length. While not the only inlet of the Gulf created by the Starfall, it is the largest, and many unique creatures call it home. The following are four examples of such wondrous wildlife.

Driftwood Lurker
Scientific Name: Pylodictis maximus
Creature of Origin: Flathead Catfish
Average Length: 15 feet
Habitat: Swamps, lakes, slow-moving rivers, and thickly vegetated brackish water inlets
Native Range: Western United States, the Mississippi River, and Mississippi Bay
Diet: Small to mid-size aquatic vertebrates

Also known as the lunkhead, the driftwood lurker is a giant flathead catfish with an armor-plated back and head that is patterned and colored to match waterlogged driftwood. Solitary lurkers hover in thick vegetation, waiting for prey to either swim by or rest on their log-like heads, at which point a sudden gulp causes the vacuum suction of the fish's large maw to slurp in prey. While they don't intentionally hunt humans, an adult driftwood lurker can suck in a person and hold on tight if they happen to step on or around the fish’s head.

Emperor Sawbill
Scientific Name: Erosopelacanus maximus
Creature of Origin: Brown Pelican
Average Length: 13 feet, wingspan 30 feet
Habitat: Warm coastal regions
Native Range: Mississippi Bay, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean
Diet: Medium-size fish and reptiles

Ranging from 4 feet or larger from head to tail, sawbills are an impressive family of mutant pelicans found across Fallen Earth, and the titanic emperor sawbill is by far the most impressive of them all. It is a rhinoceros-sized pelican with a brown body and white underbelly, a ring of trailing golden "crown" feathers near its eyes, and a robust beak with a serrated edge (a trademark feature of the family, giving them their name). Each spring, huge flocks of these razor-mouthed giants come to roost in the abandoned oil rigs and partially submerged high-rising buildings in Mississippi Bay to breed and brood. Both mother and father dutifully watch their clutch of one to three eggs until they hatch a month later and then raise the chicks for around three months, taking turns bringing food and keeping watch for predators. It is at this time that they are the most dangerous to humans, as scavengers that stumble on emperor sawbill nests can visually testify with jagged bite wounds from irate parents.

Irontail Stingray
Scientific Name: Dasyatis ensicauda
Creature of Origin: Southern Stingray
Average Length: 17 feet
Habitat: Silt-laden coastal waters
Native Range: Mississippi Bay and the Gulf of Mexico
Diet: Crustaceans, shellfish, and various detritus

The irontail stingray is a giant stingray that is easily identified by bands of hard armor plating that weave across the top of its thick disk-like body and two durable 8-inch serrated barbs that erupt from the middle of its thick and powerful tail. It sluggishly floats along in the shallows, well aware that its heavyset and well-defended body deters all but the largest predators. Prey items, most often crabs or floating bits of raw meat from the carcass another predator's kill, are siphoned off of the bottom and into crushing plates that line its small mouth. While normally docile, an iron stingray that feels threatened will utilize its barbs in the same way any other stingray would, a coating of potent venom slathering the wound.

Creature Statistics [-49 Points]

Anyone struck by the barb must make a HT -4 roll one minute later, and then hourly for eight hours. Each failure inflicts 2d injury. Tissue damage is accompanied by Dexterity-debilitating muscle spasms and excruciating pain radiating out from the wound to the entirety of the struck limb.

Leviathan
Scientific Name: Macrochelys grandis
Creature of Origin: Alligator Snapping Turtle
Average Length: 48 feet
Habitat: Shallow brackish water
Native Range: Mississippi Bay
Diet: Any substantial prey it can fit into its mouth

Few creatures inspire as much awe and wonderment as the mighty leviathan, an immense but ultimately familiar version of the pre-apocalyptic alligator snapping turtle. So much of their life is a mystery: how they interact with others of their species, how they reproduce, how long they can live, or even how many of them actually exist. All of these traits combine to create a portrait of a beast that seems more legend than fact, the dragon of a new age waiting for an adventurer to meet it in its watery lair. Leviathans spend most of their time simply waiting for prey. This sedentary nature allows their shells to accumulate flora and even fauna, effectively becoming minor islands unto themselves. Leviathans do not swim, instead slowly crawling along the bottom of the bay, and never actually head out into the ocean or submerge themselves. This allows their self-contained ecosystems to remain firmly implanted on their backs. While a leviathan can go for months without eating after a large meal, they will instinctively bite at anything human-sized or larger that moves into striking distance of their huge maw, be it living, dead, or inanimate. Some unfortunate boaters have learned this the hard way.

Creature Statistics [15 Points]

Predators With Power

Predators are dangerous enough with their own physical and psychological talents: claws, jaws, venom, brute strength, cunning, pack hunting, and camouflage, to name the greatest assets. To add psychic abilities on top of that? Overkill, perhaps, but the twisted natural order of Fallen America seemingly knows little restraint. The following are all carnivorous or omnivorous beasts that have their natural hunting talents augmented with psionic powers.

Chickcharney
Scientific Name: Athene mystica
Creature of Origin: Burrowing Owl
Average Height: 3 feet
Habitat: Open grassland and desert
Native Range: Western North America, Florida, the Caribbean, and non-Amazonia South America
Diet: Small animals, eggs, fruits, and seeds

On just a physical glance, the chickcharney may not look particularly special – it's more or less just a particularly large burrowing owl, save for the gnarled rudimentary hands that come from the wrist points of its wings, which are often curled inward and tucked away beneath the rest of the wing while at rest. Instead, what makes it a unique avian predator (and, to some, an irritating neighbor) is not its body, but its mind. These swift and agile birds have an intellect on par with the highest non-human primates, and they combine that brainpower with a psychic ability to start and control fires. Accounts have been written of chickcharneys flushing rodents out of their dens by dropping lit leaves into them, suffocating trapped prey by setting fires at the entrances to hideaways to fill them with smoke, and even placing small primitive torches around their burrows to ward away predators. Unfortunately for humans in chickcharney territories, they are inquisitive and will often thieve away shiny or interesting-looking objects, and have been known to exploit the flammability of most types of clothing when owners try to reclaim their prizes...

Creature Statistics [14 Points]
Meta-Traits: Wild Animal [-30].
Attributes: ST 5 [-50]; DX 13 [60]; IQ 6 [-80]; HT 11 [10].
Secondary Characteristics: SM -2; HP 5 [0]; Will 10 [0]; Per 11 [5]; FP 11 [5]; Basic Speed 6 [0]; Basic Move 6 [0].
Advantages: 360 Vision [25], Acute Hearing 4 [8], Acute Vision 3 [6], Firestarter* [4], Flexibility [5], Flight (Cannot hover, -15%; small wings, -10%; temporary disadvantage, No Fine Manipulators, -30%) [18], Night Vision 5 [5], Pyrokinesis 1 [16], Sharp Beak [1], Talons [8].
Perks: Burrower [1], Feathers [1], Limited Camouflage (Tall grass) [1], Penetrating Voice [1].
Disadvantages: Curious (9 or less) [-7], Short Lifespan 2 [-20].
Skills: Brawling 14 (DX+1/E) [2], Innate Attack (Gaze) 15 (DX+2/E) [4], Stealth 15 (DX+2/A) [8], Survival (Plains or Desert) 14 (Per+3/A) [12].
*Uses Improved Ignite Fire (GURPS Thaumatology: Sorcery, pg. 16). The Sorcery modifier is replaced with Psionic and Costs Fatigue (1 FP) for the same total cost.

Spirit Bear
Scientific Name: Ursus sagax
Creature of Origin: American Black Bear
Average Length: 8 feet
Habitat: Forests, plains, and mountains
Native Range: Western United States and Canada
Diet: Fish, birds, mammals, roots, and berries

Wide-ranging but rarely seen, the powerful spirit bear is a large mutant black bear with glowing white eyes and icy white swirl patterns spread across the fur of its entire body. They are infamous for having a disturbingly cunning streak and powerful psychic abilities in addition to the physical perks of being a sizable bear, and even other apex predators such as panthers tend to give them a wide berth. Fortunately, spirit bears like being left alone, and typically don't seek out conflict with animals or people. If roused to anger, however, they are formidable foes that can rend the very earth beneath their feet with a simple thought, as well as command the forces of fire and water. The ability to conjure a protective psychic energy field also means that even attempting to kill one at a distance is often a fool's errand. All of this lends to fur traders paying a hefty sum for their decorative pelts.

Creature Statistics [185 Points]
Meta-Traits: Quadruped [-35], Wild Animal [-30].
Attributes: ST 16 [30]; DX 12 [24]; IQ 5 [-100].

Perks: Fur [1], Penetrating Voice [1], Sure-Footed (Snow) [1].
Disadvantages: Bad Temper (9 or less) [-15], Loner (9 or less) [-7].
Skills: Brawling 16 (DX+5/E) [16], Survival (Plains) 13 (Per+1/A) [4], Survival (Swampland) 13 (Per+1/A) [4], Survival (Woodlands) 13 (Per+1/A) [4], Swimming 14 (HT+0/E) [1], Tracking 15 (Per+3/A) [12].

Water Panther
Scientific Name: Lontra gigantea
Creature of Origin: North American River Otter
Average Length: 17 feet
Habitat: Large bodies of freshwater with forested banks
Native Range: Eastern United States, Pacific Northwest United States, and Canada
Diet: Large fish and mammals

The water panther's physical appearance is that of a somewhat plump river otter that also happens to be the size of a large bull crocodile. Water panthers live alone or in groups of up to seven individuals and can typically be seen sun bathing on beaches, poking their graceful necks and round heads in and out of the water as they swim, or engaging in sometimes rowdy bouts of play with one another. They will also swim alongside boats and let out loud inquisitive chirps, sometimes gently bumping up against the vessel – a source of great nervousness if the boat is small enough to be capsized by a hit that's too rough. When leisure ends and hunting begins, however, the water panther shows its truly ruthless side. Its tube-like body can twist and turn with great ease as its wickedly sharp teeth impale prey while clawed paws hold on tight to often slippery quarry. That quarry is usually large fish such as the naitaka (a giant mutant muskellunge) or the young pups of the infamous afanc, also known as the beaver-whale. Afancs have potent cryokinetic powers and a bone-crushing bite, which means that water panthers often must resort to their own psychic ace in the hole to bring one down. While most members of the pack distract the adults in the afanc pod, one individual sneaks in and attempts to deliver a crushing psychic blow to the afanc pup's nervous system to paralyze it before coming in for a series of lacerating bites to the neck. When not hunting aquatic wildlife, water panthers are sometimes known to grab prey moving along the shore, including humans and near-humans.
