New minis in the latest update, and examples of painting with and without primer. I think I'll be going the primer route, seems to give a nice undercoat.

Is there any way to upload a .jpeg to this forum?

I have only just started painting, but I did one car using only a spray primer followed by the Quickshade dip, and thought I would share the results. Maybe two minutes of work (with four hours of drying time). So much better than unpainted!

I am too much of a snob to play with unpainted minis. But spray-prime / dip / spray-clear-coat could be enough for me.

Yes, @corwyn that is the “Strong Tone” over Testors (Rust-oleum) gray spray enamel.

I liked the results well enough that I applied it to the ten cars from Miniatures Sets 1 and 3.

Stupid Question: Before painting, does one clean these minis?

If so: With what?

We talked with Ben about that on Wednesday's hobby stream. He uses a household cleaner, but said just normal dish soap and water should be fine. What you're trying to make sure is gone is any of the 'mold release' that might be still on the models, which has sort of a greasy nature to it.

@43Supporter — I have not been in the habit of washing my miniatures. The batch I worked on before CW, I did, but that was because some of them were shiny in spots.

As @Aleph mentioned, just dish washing detergent does the trick. Nothing fancy, nothing too strong.
  1. Get a good amount of suds. It’s the bubbles that do most of the work.
  2. Gently rub each figure. You are not cleaning dirt from the figures, just adding a little motion so the detergent can work its magic.
  3. Rinse thoroughly. In my experience, primer can cut through a little bit of grease/oil (from the mold release agent) without much problem. But, if you leave soap on the figures, primer (and paint) will not stick to that!
  4. Gently pat dry, preferably with a fluffy towel. You should not be able to see any drops of water. For latex paint, wet figures are more of problem than never-washed figures!
  5. Air dry overnight.
I did not bother washing my CW miniatures because (last time) I had such a hard time drying the miniatures off. Probably I should have just given myself an extra day, but (this time and last) I was in a hurry to put down the primer coat.

Are decals applied after the gloss varnish?

I was amazed (and delighted) to find not just decal softening liquid but also a decal setting agent!

I found some cool Gundam decals that I will be using. I was hoping to find flames (since no way can I paint those) but nothing was available at the correct scale. (There are nice decals available for Pinewood Derby, but those are much too big.)

OK, thanks for the info.

Regular dish soap, and a soft toothbrush -- that even I can manage. :)
