Wasteland Bestiary
Okay, so I'm coming up with a Wasteland Bestiary in my little experimental thread in the Play by Post part of the forum; which is less of playing by post, and more of an experiment that can lead to one (I may move the content later if the mods want me to.)
Now, I'm coming up with lists of creatures that could be in the wasteland; this does include human mutants! First, what I've already set myself to work on (and are really just pseudo-conversions from other games). Mutated Scorpions The equivalent of ghouls; the "Burned Ones". Mutated Rats Mutated wolves/coyotes/canines Mutated lizards/snakes Also, I'm now working on an uber dragon that spews radiation, and has only wings and two legs (much like a bird with lizard features). Keep in mind that I'm not going for realism; I'm going for all the hokeyness that you would see in any Post-Apocalypse movie or game. So please, give me your ideas; I'm not asking for statistics (but if you want to provide some, I'm just fine with that!) I will, later, post what statistics I have, and make some stats based on whatever you guys come up with, if I like the concept. :)

I assume the two legs are because a dragon with the traditional four legs, two wings would have to 'evolve' from a hexapodal creature? Although I suppose you could say that the wings are modified ribs. Gets tricky. Sounds interesting. |

Re: Wasteland Bestiary
Are you specifically going for a Fallout theme? If so, don't forget brahmin. I suppose mutated cows aren't much of a threat, but a stampede of them could be a credible obstacle when trying to traverse a particular stretch of wasteland.
Elaborating on the rats theme, mutated rodents or marsupials of any kind could be fun. I seem to remember mutant wombats or something in Fallout 1 (or was it pig-rats? idr). Diverging a bit from the Fallout setting, an interesting threat in an atomic Wasteland could be radioactive sub-sapient (but mobile) goo.. that is, collective organisms mutated from algae, amoebas, hydras, or any number of other little critters. (Sure, the clear water is unsafe because it's radioactive, but the mucky water might be just as dangerous.) Even without mutations, things like wolves, jackals, and hyenas could be pretty darn dangerous, depending on adventurers' level of preparation. If you want to go really weird, radioactively-induced hybrids could be really grotesque. For instance, any kind of human/animal cross, or random combos that come up with manticores, centaurs, chimaera and the like. |

(438 Points - You Know Somebody Wanted Them) Image: An enormous reptillian biped, sickly yellow-green in color, averaging twenty feet in height. A large ruff of skin usually lies folded back against its head and neck. The neck frill is supported by long spines of cartilage, and when the lizard is angry it gapes its mouth showing a bright pink or yellow lining, and the frill flares out, displaying bright orange and red scales. Thin, membraneous wings stretch from the end of its powerful forelimbs to its hips, but it is a heavy and cumbersome flier more comfortable running over long distances. Its eyes gleam with a disquieting unnatural intellect. Re: telepathic crows in a distributed network
Dave, I can use that for a fantasy campaign. Ravens, not crows, though. Call them "Hugin Ravens". Care to stat them for me?
I would add mutated giant insects and spiders and other animals to any post-fallout bestiary. There's a mutant, blind and hairless "pit weasel" on one of the forum threads that would be excellent for a Mad Max Thunderdome style fight. Regards, C Last edited by Cernig; 08-24-2007 at 08:02 PM. |

Wasteland, which predated Fallout, had SO MANY critters to fight. From bunny rabbits to prairie dogs. o.O Quote:
