Default Viper Television Series and Car Wars

Season 1 of the Viper television series that aired on NBC in 1994 showed several weapons that would result in a few new tactics in Car Wars.

Static Pulse Projector: The primary weapon of the Defender, the Static Pulse Projector was either non-nuclear EMP generator or more likely an electrolaser, an ultraviolet laser where an electrical charge would follow the ionized path created by the laser. In Car Wars, vehicles would have to be hardened against losing power and weapons capability from a Static Pulse. The surge protector already exists in Car Wars but more accessories would be helpful to defend against Static Pulse attacks. Car Wars already had two weapons with similar effects added to its rules. Car Wars Fifth Edition had a Surge Rocket, and the Anti-Power-Plant Rocket was published in Uncle Albert's 2036 Catalog Update.

Tractor Missile: The mechanics how plastic armor in Car Wars works would need to be modified for a Tractor Missile's grappling hook to penetrate plastic armor that is not breached. Winches used with the Tractor Missile have been published in Car Wars.

Probe: Viper was ahead of its time with the Probe as drones are now commonplace in the real world. The laser modification to the Probe would be helpful in performing precision cutting of obstacles and other objects such as locked doors.

After 24 years, Viper has been released on DVD. Car Wars players should look at Viper, especially Season 1, for scenario and campaign ideas.

Back when the show first came out, there were some impressive arguments concerning how such weapons would work in _CW_, esp. considering how little actual effect Power Plant Loss actually had on a car. (Total of effects: Car slows 5 MPH every turn automatically. No effect on steering; no effect on ability to fire weapons, except lasers; nothing. So, the car with the SP hits, and slows the target down; the target then returns 4-6d6 damage.... :) )

IMSMC: Roll To-Hit; if hit is scored, roll 1d6; 1-4, the hook attaches.

The real problem here: Winches in _CW_ were fairly weak -- max. 4,000 lbs., which isn't even enough to haul a Heavy-chassis Compact. Trying to use one against a moving vehicle -- *SNAP* goes the cable.

Sadly, Paul De Meo passed away last month. Paul DeMeo and Danny Bilson were the two creators of Viper. They also created the 1990-1991 television series The Flash.
