Default This clown sighting memetic attack

More proof that we already live in a real world comparable to the THS world with this sophisticated clown sighting memetic attack spreading from the internet onto conventional news and now into real life

It's a concrete example of a toxic meme, that's for certain.

Many people are fully aware that they've adopted a given meme, and in TS they can know full well that it's a meme. If you told a Catholic or a Marxist in Transhuman Space that Catholicism or Marxism were memes, the reply would most likely be "Yes - and?"

The difference with things like the Evil-Clown-Pranks fad is that, in 2100, you'd have professional memeticists who could give you a detailed analysis of how and why the fad had spread and how long it was likely to last, and who could design such fads with a fair degree of reliability if they wanted. In 2016, the difference from a few decades ago is that the available media, including the Internet, often permit faster and wider propagation.

One way this this propagates is via hoax incidents with clowns being the aggressors. A.I.s should be able to quickly follow the leads to find that most such stories are all simple repeats of single unverified articles or first person tweet level nonsense.

It reminds me of the memetics attack from Bill Stoddard's THS mysteries campaign.
