Default Munchkin Car Wars....

Having once again battled the evil commute, I find myself pondering vehicular mayhem. And I suddenly realized that Munchkin has never been combined with Car Wars (the cars, of course, are the characters -- the driver/gunner/mechanic are sidekicks at best).

Surely this has been proposed before.

It has, but we don't really want to cross the streams of our games, for fear the result wouldn't live up to either one.

Got it. Crossing the streams is bad. Important safety tip. Thanks, Andrew.

I do remember a similar response when I suggested it.

Ironically just today, I found a potential wavering of this policy in the comments on the Illuminati Coins Kickstarter.

There is not currently a Munchkin Illuminati set. Currently. At the moment. Yet.
Of course, the illuminati is a bigger topic than just an existing game line.

Something Andrew said to me once that really stuck with me [this was before the first licensing deal deal got inked, which has blurred that line a bit thanks to Marvel, X-men, 40k, etc]: it's better to think of any given flavor of Munchkin as a love letter to an entire genre, rather than to a single product.

We don't have Munchkin Ogre...but Big Stompy Munchkin (a love letter to Gundam, Battletech, Heavy Gear, Ogre, Power Rangers, Voltron, etc) could tick all the right boxes that the more "general sci-fi, from Lost in Space to Star Wars and everything in-between" Star Munchkin isn't focused enough to.

We don't have Munchkin Car Wars...but a love letter to Car Wars, Gaslands (with Car Wars 6E on the way, what better way to set the tone of 'friendly competition' between the products?), Mad Max, and the various other 'Dystopia + Cars = Cars with Guns' stuff would make (at minimum) a great Tuckbox for Apocalypse.

We don't have Munchkin Illuminati (yet), but there's definitely way more than enough material there for Munchkin [Redacted]. Various groups as Marvel-style affiliations...Freemasons, Oddfellows, Illuminati, Rothschild, etc...to cover either race or class, etc.

Though I will note: That fear is exactly why the crossover product would...it's proof you care too much to not release it if it doesn't.

It did also occur to me that the stream crossing has already been attempted with external products such as:
  • Pathfinder
  • Starfinder
  • Warhammer 40,000

Are these exceptions to the rule, or is there a separate rationale here with third-party games?

There's less chance of brand confusion when it's someone else's IP. And even then, it wasn't foolproof: we saw a lot of people who weren't sure whether Munchkin Gloom was a Munchkin game using the Gloom IP or a Gloom game using the Munchkin IP. (It's the latter.)

Now I kinda want to play Warhammer, but with a bunch of Spyke and Flower miniatures swarming a giant resin Gazebo...
