Thursday is GURPS-Day, and welcome to another installment of Melee Academy!

Today's topic is "Fighting People Better Than You," and while the advice might seem simple, pulling it off is another thing.

I hope we see lots of contributions on this one, broadening the scope to other systems and other authors.

Fight!

Finally got in another game where I actually got to play. Joined Erik Tenkar and diverse others to go through a dungeon complex full of undead. Was an awful lot of fun, and my character walked away with some spectacular loot.

Swords and Wizardry rather than GURPS, but great DF inspiration with a small, easily converted dungeon from Tim Shorts.

Thursday is GURPS-Day, so I ponder hitting chinks in armor randomly. There's a joke there, but it's been done before and wasn't that funny in the first place. Still, what can one do to randomly hit the gaps and thin parts in armor, rather than targeting it apurpose?

For hitting a location within a location (vitals, forearm, etc), GURPS traditionally uses an additional die roll. Now, 1-in-6 is far too high of a probability for hitting chinks. 1-in-36 (roll 2d, on a 2 you hit chinks) might work, but might instead be too improbable. If you have some dice from That Other Game, rolling a 20 on a d20 might be just about right (5% shot); alternatively, you can get about the same probability with roll 2d, hit chinks on a 2 or 18.

Did you ever consider going with something akin to "Attack rolls that miss a Critical Hit by 1 automatically hit chinks in armor"? Depending on skill levels, this might get a little easy, but if you're that good, it might still fit.

Responding to Peter V. Dell'Orto's bump-pass on the lethality of firearms and achieving instant death in GURPS. Short version? Well, with enough firepower, sure. But what's the right amount of firepower?

A follow-up to my previous post on death by firearm, this one's on how much it takes to actually incapacitate someone. As is no surprise, the answer is "not much," but the key variable here is more on your foe's side: how many seconds of threat will he pose before he drops?
