Re: Long-term mundane stress
Quote:
I've got a somewhat extreme case example, as someone with sleep apnea - without my CPAP machine, I'm woken up over 40 times an hour because my throat collapses and I start choking. The waking is only for a second or two and I'm only "awake" right at the threshold of sleep, so for the longest of times I just didn't know that was happening. I just felt horrible all the time from terrible sleep and would nod off anywhere given half a chance. I was a very timid driver, because the mental effort to track everything was right at the edge of my sleep-deprived capabilities. Sleeping with the CPAP machine is a drastic revelation. I'm still woken up a few times per hour by my throat, but this radically less-fragmented sleep quality is still enough to make me feel like a whole new human, rather than a zombie. I can now also drive the car in normal conditions without feeling massively mentally strained, which is really liberating.
