Default [3e] HMS Pickle

HMS Pickle (TL5)
Built in Bermuda in 1799 and originally known as Sting, this ship was first leased by Lord Hugh Seymour as a six-gun tender for use at the Jamaica station. In 1800 he purchased the ship outright (despite orders not to do so); unable to change the fact of purchase, the Admiralty changed the ship’s name to the HMS Pickle.
The HMS Pickle had a vigorous military career, battling piracy in the Caribbean in 1800, participating in the French Revolutionary Wars from 1801 to 1803, and fighting in the Napoleonic Wars from 1803 to 1805. While present at the Battle of Trafalgar, she was too small a vessel to directly engage in the combat, but did rescue sailors of the French ship Achille. She continued in service until mid-1808, when she was lost on the Chipiona shoal off the coast of Spain.
The HMS Pickle is commemorated to this day by Royal Navy petty officers during an annual Pickle Night dinner, and in 2005 a replica of the HMS Pickle was built for the bicentennial celebration of the Battle of Trafalgar. The replica ship can be found at Portsmouth.

Design Notes:
Structure is Medium, with Standard materials. Waterproofed. Armor is DR 5 Standard Wood. The volume of the armor is figured into the design, as per the rules on p. VEii5. The ship’s volume was taken as 100 cf per displacement ton. The mast heights were calculated from formulas created by Hal on the SJG forums: Mainmast height = 0.95 x (Length + Beam), and Foremast height = 0.9 x Mainmast height. Design draft was 4.6’; this was doubled for better realism.
Stats for the 12-pdr carronades can be found on p. AN110.
