[3e] HMS Pandora
HMS Pandora (1779, TL5)
A 24-gun, sixth-rate ship of the Porcupine-class, the HMS Pandora was first deployed into the Channel to ward off the threatening fleets of Spain and France, and then to North America during the American Revolutionary War. In 1783, she was mothballed for seven years, until called out again in the event of a possible conflict with Spain. Instead, as word reached England about the mutiny aboard the HMS Bounty, the HMS Pandora was dispatched to recover the Bounty. In 1791 she reached Tahiti and captured 14 of the mutineers. She spent three months looking for the HMS Bounty, but to no avail. As she began to return to England, she ran around on the Great Barrier Reef and sank. Thirty-one crew and four prisoners perished in the sinking, and 56 more men were lost before the remaining 134 crew were able to return home. The wreck of the HMS Pandora was discovered and excavated in 1977, with exhibits of the ship being displayed in the Queensland Museum.
