Let's try Control Stone to shape non-magical stone into a barrier between the city and the meteor. 75 pts only gets you 5 levels which will affect 250lbs of stone. Maybe you meant 75pts of cost after Limitations in which case you could have 375pts of Control Stone which affects a little more than 6000 lbs or about 36 cubic feet. not enough either and the Powers that allow you find the meteor at a significant distance are extras.. To teleport as mundane rock into the path of the meteor you need to start with Warp at a base 100pts. You need to add Blind(+50%) and to di it quickly Reliable +10 for another (+50%). If you want to avoid carrying the rock into s[pace in your arms you need Tunnel for (+100%). You now have a man-sized Gate you can shove a man-sized rock through. If you want to use Powers to manipulate the rock that's extra. You also need to either make also IQ roll at -6 or spend 12 FP to make the other end of your Gate appear 100 miles away. You could offset -4 with talent but you can't put Limits on that and it cuts the pts you can spend from afinal 75 to 55 or only 275 with (-80%) Limitations. Early warning and Targeting are still extra too. That's two of the most obvious approaches and it appears that Magic-as-Powers is either lower powered or more expensive than regular Magic in this role. The Powers trick that would do this might be out there but somebody else will have to find it.

You could try to come up with an equivalence using ER, or perhaps the 25 energy-for-a-CP conversion. But then there's Wealth as a Powerstone and who knows what else that's going to muddy the comparison a good bit, even assuming we avoid Magic variants like Threshold Magic. Certainly, a Powers-style ability is highly likely to cost less FP per use than a spell cast on a massive SM -- especially since Costs FP might not even be part of the build. On the other hand, you might not need that massive SM / area. Coming up with a clever application is the point of the game in this thread. |

Re: Intercepting meteors with magic
Is there not a technique of some sort to combine levels of powers? Enough people with Create/Control teaming up could get enough matter in the way to at least slow said meteor into just rolling away...preferably towards a rival kingdom!

Combining Abilities is one of those beneficial options that a given power may or may not have. Psionic Powers uses these rules for the gestalt rules.

Re: Intercepting meteors with magic
Not really. It's a lot easier to find 20 people with 75 points into a power than it is to find even one person with 500. And when it comes to not being vaporized by a meteor, even the "evil" mages may just help out. After all, you can't really take over anything that doesn't exist anymore.
