Default Wizard's familiar

In the description of Little Cats (ITL, pg93), there is the following sentence...
"A wizard may have a cat as pet or familiar."

The same sentence is in the original rules as well, but there is no further mentioned in either edition on the subject of familiars.

Does anyone know if this was something that SJ planned to expand on, but later decided against it? I'm curious because I think it would be cool if TFT did have official rules for summoning a wizard's familiar.

I always figured familiars (and wizard's pets) were the result of a critical spell success on summon animal, or in this case Summon Scout.

They could be an interesting alternative to a staff as a way to commune with something to store mana... kind of like already happens with the Staff to Snake spell, but permanent and not involving a staff.

It isn't something the 'canon' game supports, but will appear in a supplement of spells I'll submit once the W23 publishing process kicks off.

I like that. I'm now thinking about the awesome mana pool a crazy lady with 12 cats must have at her disposal! LOL

Then again, we already have a Drain Strength spell. Maybe they should really "just be pets" for flavor and role-playing instead of some secret super weapon?

This sounds great to me, too. The occult attack could be a nasty shock to anyone attempting to touch the cat.

That does follow how Staff to Snake works - the snake gets the staff's occult attack.

I started reading Jhereg again which is why this was on my mind. I'm excited to see this concept added to the rules, but it does feel like there was initially an intent to put this in the original rules that was forgotten or abandoned for some reason.

Does the Cat explode 3d damage if you pick it up without the wizards permission? Sorry, couldn't help that.

Nope, that's from rubbing its belly.
