[Magic] Boosting Amulet/Talisman
Hi all,
I was reading up on Enchanting in general and stumbled over Amulet and Talisman. At first glance, I thought they were quite useful, but then I realized that I need to know all the spells I want to protect myself against. That makes it quite a big point investment, but also, more importantly, prevents my Yrth-based mage protecting himself against Necromancy. Similarly, to protect himself against battle mages, my mage would need to be an accomplished battle mage himself, no? So that got me thinking. Could those (and possibly Counterspell, too) be boosted a bit without completely breaking everything? I was thinking that perhaps it would be possible to create talismans that protect against a college (e.g. Necromancy). There would need to be a skill penalty or a greatly increased energy cost, but I'm not quite sure how best to do it or if there are good reasons not to do it. |

Re: [Magic] Boosting Amulet/Talisman
I'd allow sufficient reference material and a Thaumatology roll to substitute for knowledge of the actual spell - but sufficient reference material may border on illegal to own.
If you want to protect against unknown dangers, get a Magic Resistance amulet. If you know that Necromancy exists, but nothing else about it, that's still a pretty unknown threat.

Re: [Magic] Boosting Amulet/Talisman
Thank you!
That does look like the likeliest solution and the idea about reference material seems pretty good, too. Of course, that is a lot less useful for non-mages, no? Since it is not always on, but needs to be powered, at double cost. So only MR 1-2 might be feasible, and that is already quite draining... I'll ponder it some more, but thank you for the pointers. |
