Page 173: "Even villages may acquire temporary Gates after harvest, if there is a city in urgent need of their products."

$10 a week on commute costs (best case scenario for a lucky few) is half of the "$20 for bare subsistence" noted on page 57.

BTW: My math on Gate Stations agrees with the comment above that it is very rare to have gates to any village too small to appear on the Duchy map.

Common gate travel allows you to have large urban populations without needing to clear out all the monsters, as befits a high fantasy setting.

And that's the low-end stuff. A properly aged bottle of Chateau du Thorsz "Red Room Merlot" goes for $500.
