Default Define "ape"

I was playing our recently purchased Steampunk edition with my husband and Father-in-law this evening. I was battling a monster for the win. Multiple items were thrown out against me when my FIL tried to play the Monkey Wrench card that gives extra points to a card that shows an ape, monkey or monk. This led to a rather entertaining debate on whether the humans shown on the particular monster card in play counted as apes. I, obviously, said they didn't. My husband backed me up but our cousins and my FIL, even hours later, are adamant that they should be counted as apes. So... What do yall think? Humans count as apes in the game or not?

For Munchkin purposes, humans are not apes (and neither are any other hominids).

The parenthetic phrase is slightly problematic given that apes are part of the family Hominidae (and the subfamily Homininae.) You have to get down to the tribe level before humans and gorillas differ, and all the way to the genus level before human and chimpanzees are in different groups.

The earlier part of the statement is of course authoritative and definitive, and what I'd expect within the game: apes would be tailless bipedal non-human primates.

Correction duly noted. I didn't do my research.

Humans still aren't apes, though.

Hey now. You dictate game reality, not general reality. ;)
