As a wild guess, how about Johnny Strabler, played by Marlon Brando in The Wild One? Although it seems this was based on a short story, not a novel.

Nope, not him. Not Brando at all, but you're looking at movies from the right time.

ETA: Actually, my Google-fu tells me it could be Humphrey Bogart as Dix Steele in In a Lonely Place, although there's no mention of Greed, or the character Ed Neilsen in Taxi, which seems more obscure and appears only to be based on a French movie, and I'd never heard of either of these films before searching.

I have added a few more clues. I've never heard of Taxi, and somehow managed to miss seeing In A Lonely place, which I will remedy post haste. Thank you for making me aware of it.

In which case, I reckon I've found the answer, although in the spirit of the game I don't think you're supposed to rely on Wikipedia.

BTW- You've got Panhandling as a skill, but I suspect you've confused that with panning for gold, which would be Prospecting, whereas panhandling means begging. Apologies though if the character was a beggar, I'm only going on what's in the Wikipedia article.
