Default New Ninja rules

I can't believe no one has posted about this yet. The updated rules for the Ninja cybertank are up, and I'm curious what people think.

I like the simplicity compared to the earlier rules, and I do have one thought on the Ninja's detection ability:

Quote:
A Ninja has state-of-the-art detection equipment, giving it advanced awareness of mines and other hidden units. Whenever a Ninja is about to enter a hex with a mine or a hidden unit, the opposing player needs to acknowledge the presence of a mine (or hidden unit) within the hex. The Ninja may then choose to stay still, move elsewhere, or continue into the hex. If a Ninja voluntarily enters a mined hex, the mine goes off only on a roll of a 6, instead of the usual 5 or 6.
This would also work for camouflaged and dummy units, allowing the Ninja to detect them from an adjacent hex instead of having to move into or shoot into the hex to reveal the enemy.

What does everyone else think about this version of the Ninja?

So tricks aren't a thing now?

The tricks are toast, though they may appear as special rules in certain scenarios down the road. Anyone is free to resurrect them in their own games, of course.

Personally, I like the simplicity of the current version.

Simplicity has always been a hallmark of Ogre -- this latest revision keeps the tradition going.

One of the defining characteristics of the game is, because of the scale of the weapons and the turn-length, you play the game "from 30,000 feet up", so to speak. These rule fit that character much better.

That'll work.

Does the -1 to hit include CMs?

The last paragraph seems to imply that players are free to invent their own Tricks.

You just have to get your opponent to agree to them. :D

I would argue the minus one to hit does not include cruise missiles. The Ninja's countermeasures are effective against targeted munitions, not the massive shock wave from a large thermonuclear blast.

I've just realised. This is basically the same thing that was proposed back in '08, with a little bit extra.

The general feeling back then was that this made the Ninja rather hard.

Doesn't seem that bad anymore...

Is someone at SJG using orbital mind control lasers? That's a bit unfair.
