I've always figured that shark men were supposed to be a hat tip to the earlier fishmen because of those similarities.

Yeah, they're basically the same except bigger and badder, and updated to 4e. 4e Shark Men are bad news unless utterly outclassed by technology: they're as smart as Humans and Mers, but the weakest librarian among them can just bear-hug an athletic Mer and swim for bottom if they're hell-bent on methodical murder, gnawing on them the whole way if they're especially angry. It's a rarity in fantasy to see a big, strong species with Human-level IQ and self-control.

Yeah, it's a potent looking template. They seem like a good candidate for eventually dominating a timeline unless other forces conspire against them.
