Soldier is the "definitive" skill for, well, soldier. But it's in-game uses pale before that of Tactics, which with the right optional rules, is a spectacularly good deal. I explore this a bit, giving some boosts to Soldier that reflect my experience (recent) in the Alien Menace game.

Not your usual post for this blog, but in my ever-widening search for GURPS-related content, I take some musing on the pricing of the Contacts advantage in GURPS, that started with a thread on the SJG Forums, and appropriate it for a blog post. It started with a comment by Fred Brackin that seemed to be directly on point to me, and I just went from there in an attempt to get Contact right.

Thanks, Doug. It's not the kind of article I'd expect to find in your blog, but it looks like an idea worth playtesting.

Thursday is GURPS-Day, and welcome to another installment of melee academy. This one was inspired by a question on the forums about how to be good at breaking free of grapples if you're a striker. There are a couple "rules exploits" that technically you _can_ use, but in the end, the answer is as mundane as you'd expect. Check out +Peter V. Dell'Orto's post from last week on Technique Adaptation and Skill Adaptation for more details on why.

So if you have the Karate Kid and Boxing Boy, is example character no. 3 the Brawling Badass?

Seconded. This may become an official "house rule" in my campaigns.

Heh. Wish I'd thought of that at the time. You can never have too much alliteration, after all.

On Wednesday night we played in Nathan Joy's Dungeon Fantasy game, going through the Pathfinder Jade Regent adventure path. We entered a spooky haunted forest, and the various spirits did a lot of possessing . . . but possessing a group with a Warrior Saint whose patron god wants to let restless spirits rest? Not so productive for the spirits. We also got lined up for our big set of fights next time . . .and ended having to leave behind, at least temporarily, more potential loot than we've ever seen before.

As my week of heavy gaming continues, I joined Erik Tenkar , Tim Shorts , Peter V. Dell'Orto , and Chris Maler continuing to level up in the lair of the mad archmage. We indulged in some really awesomely fun poor decision making, and despite deserving it, failed to be brought low. Another awesome old school romp, Swords and Wizardry style.

We started another mission in the Alien Menace campaign. I used a few new tools to sculpt the plotline, but made a few mistakes - those are worth a separate post, which will come soon.

This time, the team was ordered to another planet to retrieve a few things that had been lost.
