Default [Low-Tech] Footwear and Light Leather Revision

The "feet" location is quite problematic, as weight and cost of many items do not match very well with the 10% feet coverage given by the armor table. The real feet coverage should be between 15% and 20%, with 10% only for the top of the feet (the soles have a lesser area surface, but, for game purposes, 10% is fine for the soles as well). So, 20% of weight and cost of torso armor for feet, both top and bottom.

The foot armor listed in Low-Tech Instant Armor (sollerets, sabatons) should protect only the top of the feet and is usually worn over common footwear (shoes, boots, sandals). Armor covering both top and bottom of the feet should be 20% of weight and cost of torso armor. Metal armor covering the bottom of the feet, although possible, wasn’t common at all. Mail chausses were usually worn over shoes without covering the soles or they had integrated leather soles for a better grip on terrain, while scale or segmented plate sabatons were usually worn over padded chausses or leather shoes.

Apart for feet coverage, another problems are the DR assigned to the various footwear and the weight and cost of the gear.

According to Low-Tech Instant Armor:
  • Moccasins have these stats: DR 1*, $40, 1 lbs., Don 6, Hold -1, and they give +1 to Stealth like bare feet.
  • Shoes have these stats: DR 1* (0* vs. impaling), $40, 2 lbs., Don 6, Hold -3.

So, what's the point to wear Shoes if Moccasins, at the same price, afford a better protection against impaling attacks, weight half as much, give +1 to Stealth and are easier to conceal (although there may be very few reasons to conceal civilian footwear)?

Another problematic entry is Light Leather. Light Leather shouldn't be the same thing of Winter Clothing and Fur, because it doesn't provide any bonus to conceal armor or items beneath it, nor it protects the wearer against cold weather as proper Winter Clothing does. Also, its cost should be inferior to the cost of Medium Leather and Padded Cloth.

So I'd propose to use these stats for Light Leather:
  • TL 0 | Description: Leather, Light | DR 0* | $40 | 4 lbs. | Don 15 | Holdout 0 | Notes: +1 DR vs. cutting.

About soles, I'd propose three different types:
  • Light Soles: soft leather soles a bit thicker than Light Leather and/or reinforced with light padding. They give DR 1*. Weight: 0.5 lbs. Holdout -1. Notes: -1 DR vs. impaling. Gives +1 to Stealth.
  • Ordinary Soles: thicker reinforced leather soles, more rigid and more resistant to impaling attacks. They give DR 1. Weight: 0.8 lbs. Holdout -2.
  • Heavy Soles: sturdy Medium Leather soles, possibly reinforced with wood. They give DR 2. Weight: 1.5 lbs. Holdout -3.

These types of soles can be combined with other armor covering the top of the feet (using the relative Cost and Weight of their Sandals versions). The Stealth bonus given by Light Soles is lost if they are hobnailed or if the top of the shoe is covered with rigid or metallic armor (Mail Jazerant and Asian Jack of Plates could constitute two exceptions). Also, hobnails should give +1 DR to the soles and -1 to Holdout. Don should be at least 10 for all foot armor and gear.

Finally, Boots should be treated like Shoes with an integrate protection for lower legs. Usually the latter was made of Light Leather or Medium Leather, but could be also Light Layered Leather, Padded Cloth, Light Layered Cloth, Light to Medium Scale/Lamellar or Jack of Plates or Light to DR 4 Brigandine, both in the form of reinforced shoe extensions or armored gaiters. Some boots can extend their coverage upon to the knees and to the thighs. Light Leather Boots that cover the thighs or Medium Leather Boots that cover the knees should also give -1 to Hiking skill because they make marching more fatiguing. The penalties for Light Leather Boots and Medium Leather Boots do apply respectively to those Boots with leg protection made of armor with base Holdout penalty equal to 0 and to those Boots with leg protection made of armor with base Holdout penalty equal or superior to -1.

Revisited Footwear Table
