Being bought with points means that the gadget is part of your character and almost entirely unremovable for very long unless you got it with the Unique limitation. However, where signature gear assured the treasured item will always serendipitously be shielded from destruction and more than transient loss, with a gadget that is broken you may be able to replace it with a new one depending on the concept. It will virtually never be beyond replacement or repair. Tony Stark will always be able to make armour. Thor will always be able to repair Mjolnir.

A lot of GURPS writing clearly says that spending CP on something doesn't guarantee it protection - you can lose limbs, cripple powers, lose social advantages, and yes have Allies die.

On the other hand, there's a pervasive and not unjustified feeling that taking stuff off someone's character sheet is a Big Deal.

In the particular case of Gadgets, as David Johnston2 notes, unless the Unique limitation is applied there is a presumption that it is always possible (though potentially not easy) to replace a lost or broken Gadget.
