Default All copies of CoC book burned in China

Sons of the Singularity, a small publisher of RPGs, ran a Kickstarter last year for a Call of Cthulu sourcebook, successfully raising over $20,000. Called The Sassoon Files, it was finally printed last week, only for the publisher to claim that the Chinese government then stepped in and burned every copy.

I don't see any reason to doubt it; the people I know who've been following this Kickstarter find the account credible. The sourcebook dealt heavily with Shanghai and its surroundings and the Chinese government is apparently quite concerned with their image abroad.

Yeah, those Shub-Niggurath cultists are a real embarrassment to them.

This is a real situation that is apparently costing a small creator a large amount of money through no real fault of his own. I don’t think joking about the situation is in particularly good taste right now.

Well, that's bitterly ironic. We'd laugh at how ham-handed and counterproductive this is as an image control exercise if Sons of Singularity were not getting hit by the shrapnel.

Some more solid information (finally some text rather than just video):

https://www.reddit.com/r/rpg/comment...upplement_the/
  • probably not burned, but rather pulped.
  • generally the Chinese authorities don't care about stuff printed for export; this might be an official exceeding his remit. Not yet clear.
  • the publisher is getting its money back and finding another printer, so this is effectively a print delay. That's clearly not great but it shouldn't have a massive effect on them.
  • the PDF is available. :)

I recall Paradox have had repeated issues with their games in China for accurate portrayals of history viz-a-viz the Chinese nation so it's credible at least. And a useful learning point when it comes to building your supply chain ...

Certainly moved it onto my radar, tho I may wait for the physical book to be available.

he initial quote was the first written account I could find -- didn't mean to imply doubt about the destruction of the books.

And yes
