Over on my occasional blog, I've shared some musings on TFT magic discussing house rules for casting from books and being able to learn spells that are above a character's IQ.

Very nice indeed Shostak. While I've long advocated for a Wizardry talent, and talents in general costing all characters the same, I never went so far as to suggest a low cost of only 2 for Wizardry. Leaving them almost as much room for mundane talents as a non-wizard would certainly change the balance in combat.
Not that I dislike the idea at all, I just assumed it would get me burned as a heretic :) The new take on spell books is intriguing, and I'll be mulling that over for a long time.

Thanks, Steve. I've toyed with having Wizardry cost 2 at character generation only, and 3 after that, but decided it was too fiddley. At 2 it costs enough to discourage just anyone learning it to be able to learn a spell or two.

The latest musings over on my occasional blog are on HTH combat, in response to a request in a thread over on the main forum. Your feedback is welcomed!

As a counter point (to learning talents/spells above IQ level) might I suggest that Alertness is a disadvantage?
It's for a character who has a high IQ that drives their perception but they're too lazy to pick up talents and spells of high complexity. Ergo their listed IQ is lower than their true potential.

Whataboutism scaling ST (vs health) by the size of the critter?

Something that never seemed right in this game is the rule that spells of IQ15 and above cannot be cast from a book because they are too complex. Complexity would actually make books more necessary, even for wizards who know the spell well.
