In fact this came up recently in the game in which I'm a player. An outcast (voluntarily) who had wound up running with a group of Lust Demons was on trial. Being as how he'd helped one of the PCs out of a rather sticky situation involving the aforementioned demons, several of the PCs testified on his behalf, and his sentence was commuted.

That was a fun one. And, for the audience, "commuted" was not the same as "rapped on the knuckles." 20 years bound in a vessel and serving at a Tether of his Superior's choice is a sentence that could still get him killed in action if he's unlucky -- but it's useful work that could teach a useful lesson.

In a way, there's a parallel in US law. About the only way to beat a "conspiracy" charge is if you not only renounce the conspiracy but provide aid that makes it fail. This Outcast wound up doing just that, and the testimony to that effect helped him beat a death sentence by the skin of his teeth.
