Playing cards after you lose combat and have to Run Away

if you lose to a monster, can you play cards before rolling the dice or after rolling the dice ? (bad stuff is you discard or you die )

I suggest that if you're concerned about playing cards from your hand that you could lose to Bad Stuff, play them before you declare that you're going to Run Away (assuming you could play them during combat). However, if you roll to Run Away and fail against a Monster that would tell you to discard your hand or die, you couldn't play a single card from your hand, and if you have no cards in your hand, you'll have to take death.
