Default The Fantasy Trip cannot be played by post

WITHOUT NUMBERED HEXES

I will be making a series of dungeon maps with numbered hexes(individually numbered) for an experiment in Play by Post (on line forums) The Fantasy Trip adventures

Can you think of anything else that might make playing in a text based on-line version of TFT easier?

If you haven't already I might suggest looking at:

and scroll down to the 'On-line Game' section for some hints.

I'm not sure you would really need to use numbered hexes as much of the movement will be 'we move down the hall', 'Bob will open the door and I'll be behind him' type stuff. Numbered hexes might actually slow down that part of the play.

Facing info would only come into play during battles and that could be simplified by posting a hex with letters around the outside as your guide (example: flat side up = A, clockwise upper right = B and so on) so you'd state 'I move to Goblin's B.

Numbered hexes would be needed if you want to really down and dirty the tactical aspect, otherwise if it's the RP aspect you're going for not so much.

Either way sign me up when you're ready to try it out.

Hmm, I've played TFT & GURPS by post, phone, and email rather a lot. Numbered hexes would be nice, but it never seemed strictly necessary.

e.g.:

"I move to the spear-orc's left side hex and face him."
"I move 3 hexes N and one NE and face N."

I find it more important to number hexes on a strategic map than a tactical. That's because there's usually a lot more hexes on a strategic map, and often a shortage of names. "So if I understand right we're in 4113. I say we ride these frogs we've captured downriver to 3713, overland to the port in 3612, get a wormship or whatever to 3306, walk to 3308, kill the evil princess and rescue our friend the ogre." If the hexes themselves are too small for numbers then having axes along the map edge is usually enough.

I run the TFT Discord channel, and I already assigned names to the hexes and megahexes on the Melee & Wizard maps, so people can play TFT on the server. They can be viewed here:

Do I get a DX boost if I stand in the DX hex? Maybe a boost to healing if I stand in the RX hex? ;)

IMHO, there's a better approach than numbering (or labeling) each hex on a map. Just label all of the outer hexes. Here's a bad example (but it does illustrate the concept):

If you want to label each megahex, then just label the center hex of the megahex and adopt a convention like "the north hex is 1 and the numbering continues clockwise until you get to 6" so that on this map:

'AX' is replaced by 'A'. 'AA' thru 'AF' aren't labeled but it is understood (according to convention) that 'AA' is 'A1'. 'AF' is 'A6'.

Yes, even as I made the map, I realized that some of the hexes' names on these maps open themselves up to joking!
